Ethical Issues BATs Outline ethical issues in Psychological Research Explain how psychologists deal with each ethical issue.
Apply the code of ethics issued by the BPS to consider if a piece of research should be allowed
Ethical Issues – Lesson 2
• Read pages 110-114 in Exploring Psychology and/or pages 70-73 of the Complete Companion • Do the activity – Thinking Critically about Psychology p114 Exploring Psychology • Create a summary sheet to highlight for each ethical issue… the BPS guidelines, how to deal with the issue and the limitations of each method.
Ethical Issues – Lesson 3
• Set up an Ethics Committee – see p 73 of Complete Companion • 6 groups – one for each issue • Devise a piece of research that raises that issue.
• Use the sheet to write a proposal • Pass your proposal to another group, who now become the Ethical Committee for your proposal. – Use the worksheet to help you decide whether the study should proceed Extension work – p71 Complete Companion q3.2 a-e
Homework
• Do the ‘What if?’ worksheet • Find out about either Milgram (1963) p164 or Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment ( www.prisonexp.org
) • What ethical issues were involved with the experiment you chose?
• What did Milgram or Zimbardo do to address these issues?
• Would the research be allowed today? Give a reason for your answer.
