MAGALAT REVOLT
The Magalat revolt was an
uprising in 1596,led by
Magalat, chief of Tuguegarao (Cagayan) and his
brother in opposition to the
illicit tribute collection.The
Spanish Governor-General
Francisco Tello de Guzman
sent Pedro de Chaves with
colonial troops . They fought
successfully against the
rebels and captured and
executed several leaders
under Magalat. Magalat was
assasinated by his own men
who were promised rewards
by the Spaniards.
DIEGO SILANG REVOLT
Diego Silang was a revolutionary leader. His revolts was
fueled by grievances stemming
from Spanish taxation,abuses
and by his belief in selfgovernment, that the
administration and leadership
of the Roman Catholic Church
and government in the Ilocos
region should be invested in
trained Ilocano officials.
Spain allied with France
during the 7 years’ war in
opposition to Great Britain.
The British, in response
sought to diminish the
Spanish Empire.The British’s
naval forces seized Manila on
October,1762,and the
surrender of the Spanish
Philippines to Britain during
the British occupation of the
Philippines,inspired
uprisings in the north of
Cagayan and Ilocos Norte.
Though Silang wanted to
replace Spanish officials in
Ilocos with native officials,
he voluteered to head
Ilocano forces against the
British,Spanish
administrators instead
transferred their power to
the Bishop of Nueva
Segovia, who rejected
Silang’s offer.Silang’s group
attacked the city and
imprisoned its priests.He
began an association with
the British who
appointed him governor of
Ilocos on their behalf and
promised him military
reinforcement. The British
force never materialized.
Diego Silang was killed by
one of his friends, a SpanishIlocano mestizo named
Miguel Vicos, whom the
Church paid to assasinate
Diego Silang.
MAGTANONG AND
MALIBIRAN REVOLT
The revolt was led by Lt.
Andres Magtanong and SubLt.Francisco Malibiran. The
revolt was caused as
reaction to the estanco in
1787.They killed the visitador
and the Tobbacco monopoly
guards, but they were
quickly subdued. Their
houses were burned and
they were hanged and
their heads were put on
stakes for public display.
