I can jump
up to add.
I can jump
back to
subtract.
Look at the ruler.
We can use a ruler to help us add and subtract.
A ruler is just like a number line. We can jump using
standard ( inches, feet, yards ) or metric ( centimeters, meters ).
We can jump up to add. We can jump back to subtract.
This little bunny is adding numbers by jumping
on the number line.

Thinking about math is fun.
When you use a number line
or a ruler to help you you
can talk about the math
as you add and subtract.
I had 12 stickers but I lost 3. How many do I have now?
I drew a number line on my paper. I started at 12.
I moved back 3 because I lost some stickers.
I have 9 stickers left.

Can you talk about the math?
Give it a try.
My equation is
51 - 14 = ?
My equation is
18 + 11 = ?
My equation is
75 - ? = 52
Can you talk about the math?
My equation is
68 - 56 = ?
My equation is
100 - 89 = ?
My equation is
21 - ? = 19
Can you talk about the math?
My equation is
93 - 71 = ?
My equation is
56 + 38 = ?
My equation is
? - 7 = 74
Another tool you can use to help you talk
about the math is a hundreds chart or hundreds board.
In the morning there were 15 students
waiting in the cafeteria. 11 more students
came in for breakfast. The bell rang and
some students went to class. Now there
are 13 students in the cafeteria.
How many students went to class?
15 + 11 - _____ = 13
In the morning there were 15 students waiting in the
cafeteria. 11 more students came in for breakfast.
The bell rang and some students went to class.
Now there are 13 students in the cafeteria.
How many students went to class?
15 + 11 - _____ = 13
TALK ABOUT THE MATH!
I used a hundreds board. I started at 15
and moved down one row which is 10 more,
then I moved 1 to the right and landed on
26. This shows the 11 that came in. Starting
at 26 I need to move back to 13 because that is how
many students are left. I move up one row to 16 and then 3 to the left.
I moved back a total of 13 spaces. That means that 13 students left the cafeteria.
Now you try some.
The School Store was open. 17 students
were buying pencils, 22 students were buying
paper and some students wanted erasers.
There were 43 students at the school store.
