She has influenced industry standards in her field and provided research leadership. She generates high levels of international collaboration and provides significant public commentary. Her referees also identify her as a young researcher who has the potential to continue to make a significant impact on her field. Physical Sciences Finalists Professor Bryan Gaensler University of Sydney Professor Michael Breadmore University of Tasmania Professor Matt Alistair King University of Tasmania Physical Sciences WINNER Professor Bryan Gaensler University of Sydney Comments from the panel Professor Gaensler has a major influence on the directions of research in radio astronomy and astrophysics generally in Australia and is a leading researcher internationally. He enjoys wide recognition by peers through prestigious Fellowships and other awards. He is a prolific publisher with excellent citation rate and his hscore is outstanding for the period. He has a strong record of research student supervision and publishes with his students frequently. Professor Gaensler is a gifted communicator and is highly committed to public education. He attracts very strong support from referees of the highest international quality. Engineering & Technology Finalists Professor Zaiping Guo University of Wollongong Dr. Da-Wei Wang University of Queensland Dr. Qiaoliang Bao Monash University Engineering & Technology WINNER Dr. Da-Wei Wang University of Queensland Comments from the panel Dr Da-Wei Wang has an extensive research record in electrochemical materials and nanotechnology. In particular, his work involves a number of contributions directly relevant to both supercapacitor and novel battery energy storage systems. These technologies are widely recognised as being a critical component to supporting renewable energy systems. Dr Wang's work has resulted in substantial advances in the resilience and robustness of these devices and fundamental new insights into new materials families based on epoxide-containing nanocarbon materials. His research has led to a large number of publications in top level international journals, several of which have over hundreds of citations. It has also leads to a number of patents based on this research. Life Sciences & Biological Sciences Finalists Professor Sean Richard Connolly James Cook University Dr. Suresh Mathivanan La Trobe University Dr. Barry William Brook University of Adelaide Life Sciences & Biological Sciences WINNER Dr. Barry William Brook University of Adelaide Comments from the panel Brook has an outstanding and sustained publication record of high impact and a clear impact outside of the academic field. A large number of diverse publications, highly cited. He has a remarkable M index and a large number of international collaborations. Barry Brook is the clear winner of the award, ranked number 1 by all panelists. He has an outstanding reputation in his field, a sustained record of research excellence attested to by a very large number of publications that are highly cited. His work on global environmental change, particularly on extinction models, has also had a marked external impact. Barry is also an excellent science communicator involved in prominent outreach activities. Medicine & Medical Sciences Finalists Professor Steven Allender Deakin University Dr. Enzo Porrello University of Queensland A/Professor Jodie Louise Simpson University of Newcastle Medicine & Medical Sciences WINNER A/Professor Jodie Louise Simpson University of Newcastle Comments from the panel Jodie works in the field of asthma and her research seeks to determine the mechanisms which cause a particular form of asthma (non-eosinophilic asthma) which may be resistant to traditional treatments. Her research has attracted more than 2000 citations and is published in international leading journals in the field. She is a leading chief investigator of a national multicentre clinical trial in Australia which is funded by the MH&MRC and which seeks to determine if macrolide antibiotics can reduce the symptoms of asthma. She has played active roles on professional bodies and societies, is an active promoter of the Scientists in Schools program organised by the CSIRO and has played a key role in supporting doctoral and postdoctoral trainees. Thank You.
