THEN…….
● The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards were first adopted by the State Board of
Education in 1996.
● The standards describe what students should know and be able to do upon completion of a
thirteen-year public school education. The standards are also designed to help teachers prepare
our students to be college- and career-ready.
NOW…
● The Common Core Standards adopted by New Jersey in 2010, with full implementation in
2013-14, were drafted by assessment experts and teachers from across the country, and are
designed to ensure students are prepared for today’s entry-level careers, freshman-level college
courses, and workforce training programs.
● The Common Core focuses on critical-thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills students
will need to be successful.
● Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, and four territories have voluntarily adopted and are
moving forward with the standards.
Addressing the Shifts
English Language Arts (ELA):
Complexity: Practice with complex text and academic language
Knowledge: Building knowledge through content-rich non-fiction
Evidence: Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence, both
literary and informational.
Math:
Focus: Greater focus on deeper instruction, strong foundational skills,
procedural fluency.
Coherence: Coherent progression across grades linked to authentic
topics.
Rigor: Pursue understanding, procedural fluency, and application with
rigor.

Standard RL (Reading Literature) 4.3
Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama,
drawing on specific details the text (e.g. a character’s thoughts,
words, or actions.)

● Compare and contrast a text to an audio, video, or multimedia
version of the text, analyzing each medium's portrayal of the

words).
● Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text,
assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is
relevant and sufficient to support the claims.
● Analyze how two or more authors writing about the same topic
shape their presentations of key information by emphasizing
different evidence or advancing different interpretations of facts.

Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of primary and secondary
sources.

Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source;
provide an accurate summary of the source distinct from prior knowledge or
opinions.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.6-8.3
Identify key steps in a text's description of a process related to history/social
studies (e.g., how a bill becomes law, how interest rates are raised or
lowered).

Determine the meaning of symbols, key terms, and other domainspecific words and phrases as they are used in a specific scientific or
technical context relevant to grades 6-8 texts and topics.

2nd Grade MATHEMATICS
NJCCCS:
Standard 4.1.2.A.2 Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
Demonstrate an understanding of whole number place value concepts.
CCSS:
Standard 2.NBT.1
Understand that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of
hundreds, tens, and ones; e.g., 706 equals 7 hundreds, 0 tens, and 6 ones.
Understand the following as special cases:
a. 100 can be thought of as a bundle of ten tens — called a “hundred.”
b. The numbers 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900 refer to one, two, three,
four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine hundreds (and 0 tens and 0 ones).

How Is Student Progress Measured?
Narrative Writing Task
MAY require the student to complete a story, organizing thoughts in a
clear, understandable way that is easy to follow and interesting to
read.
MAY require the student to complete an organized description of a
scientific process.
MAY require the student to complete a comprehensive essay about a
historical person or an account of an historical event.
Literary Analysis Task
Requires looking at 2 different types of literary texts, including poems, story
excerpts, plays, famous speech passages, or non-fiction articles.
Can be from a variety of content areas, including Science and Social Studies.
Text passages will be brief.
Asks questions that require students to pay attention to language choices and
comparative thinking.
Requires student to COMPARE and CONTRAST.
Research Simulation Task (RST)
Students are provided a variety of different sources (print and
non-print) related to a particular topic, including texts, videos,
photographs, graphs, surveys, maps, paintings,, etc.
Students are expected to answer text-dependent questions and
produce writing that “dances” between different sources in a
cohesive, understandable manner.
The final product is akin to integrating Compare/Contrast with
Argument/Opinion.
Students use Evidence-Based Responses to compare/contrast,
then make a claim.

*Algebra I student will take the Algebra PARCC in during
March window only.
*Students in Grades 4 and 8 will also take the NJ ASK Science
on May 27.
