The start of Imperialism…
• European countries need raw materials
– It’s the Industrial revolution, they always are
looking for raw materials
• In the mean time Belgium has Dr. Livingston
missing in Africa
– Henry Stanley goes looking for him on a Christian
mission
In Africa…
• He finds Dr. Livingston and they head back to
Europe
• Dr. Livingston I presume…
• King Leopold II of Belgium hears about all the
great stuff they saw and decides he wants it
(mainly the raw materials  Diamonds and Metals)
SEND THE ARMY!! TAKE IT OVER!
I DON’T WANT MY
GRANDSON DYING
IN YOUR ARMY
OVER DIAMONDS!!
He will not die for
diamonds! We are
going to teach the
Africans, to show them
the ways of civilization
and to ditch their
barbaric traditions!
SOLUTION: WHITE MAN’S BURDEN

SOLUTION: WHITE MAN’S BURDEN

• Which of these developments in Africa was a
cause of the other three?
A. Rival tribal groups fought wars.
B. The Berlin Conference of 1884

Boer War
• Britain and the Dutch both wanted South
Africa
• They had to go to war over it between the
British and the Dutch farmers (Boers)
• Brits push the border back and WIN!
LET’S GO TO
INDIA!
England…
• Imperializes India and of course the Indians
hate it
• The East India Company is running the
country, where they are basically using the
land for cash crops and don’t care about
anything else
• Except suppressing the Indians
– Indians could not walk down the sidewalk or have
equal rights and they got the crap food and drinks
England…
• Has made Opium illegal…
– So instead they will grow it in India and trade it
with China
• So Britain goes to War with China, forces them
into an unfair treaty
• Trade: Britain imports opium, exports tea.
– Ruins China’s culture, because now its full of drug
addicts
– Starts Spheres of Influence
Spheres of Influence
• European nations carve up China like a melon
• Certain European nations are only allowed to
trade into certain ports
– Cultural diffusion happens in those ports
