International Climate Change Conferences

demonstrate the importance of solving environmental problems.

Denmark

The Kingdom of Denmark has the territory of 43 094 km ² The population is 5,564,219 people.

.

The area occupied by land - 42 394 km ², water - 700 km ².

Ecological Problems

Ecology is the science which studies biota, environment and their interaction.

It comes from the Greek consumption, etc.

oikos = house

and

logos = study.

Ecology is the study of ecosystems and ecological problems. There are some ecological problems in the world such as global warming, climate change, deforestation, desertification, ozone depletion, water, air and land pollution, endangered animals, energy

Environmental Protection in Denmark

Water Pollution Pollution from wastewater has been dramatically reduced in Denmark through modernization of the wastewater treatment system. Strict regulation of the agricultural sector, industry, waste deposits and oil tanks as well as clean-up projects, monitoring and reduction of water consumption have reduced the threat from this pollution. Computer-controlled storage tanks and new generation of mini-treatment plants to reduce emissions from waste water have all contributed to it.

Air pollution Estimations show that air pollution causes severe health problems which are the reason for 3 400 premature deaths each year. In Denmark, monitors pollutants in the air in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency the National Centre for Environment and Energy. Danish companies are obliged to use the best available technology (BAT).

BAT means that overall pollution is minimised.

Transportation Travelling by train is a comfortable alternative to planes, buses and cars when the CO2 emission is significantly lower. Denmark offers an efficient train network. Copenhagen has a lot of S-trains and the metro. Major Danish cities have established low emission zones in which heavy-duty vehicles are obliged to having filters reducing the emissions. Driving without particle filters is not permitted in these zones.

20% of the population in Copenhagen go to work by bicycles giving zero pollution. Bicycles are available even for politicians for getting to and from meetings. One can use a bike to take children to kindergartens and schools. Tourists can use free public bicycles

Waste Treatment In the waste hierarchy recycling ranks highest, the second is incineration with energy recovery and the last - land filling. Waste is treated as a resource: the plants are not only burning waste, but also generate heat and electricity. The high temperature and a large number of filters trapping pollutants, minimize ecological damage.

Waste is separated in containers Waste recycling process Waste electronic equipment is collected separately. Some of it is sent abroad for recycling.

Sludge from treatment plants is used as fertilizer in agriculture

Ecological Food Denmark has a long tradition of producing organic and environmentally friendly food. Many people support the governmental organic label ”Ø” which promotes control, research within the field of ecology. You can buy such food almost in every shop, besides there are some shops which sell only ecological food in Denmark.

Denmark sells more organic products per capita than any other country in the world.

Endangered Animals Climate change will bring many animals to the very brink of extinction because many animals won't be able to adapt to fast developing changes in climate, and many of them can perish from the face of our planet forever.

There are 230 endangered animal species in Denmark. Danish people take care of them at the Zoos and in the National parks.

Aalborg Zoo has more then 1.200 animals from more then a hundred different species. It is one of the biggest zoos in Denmark. The key values of the Zoo is conservation of endangered species and preservation of nature. The Zoo plays a major role in several international projects supporting these goals

Danish National Parks Jægersborg Dyrehave Jægersborg Dyrehave and 100 Sika Deer.

('The Deer Park') is a forest park in the north of Copenhagen. It is noted for its mixture of huge, ancient oak trees and large populations of red and fallow deer. This park is maintained as a natural forest. It has herds of 2100 deer in total with 300 Red Deer, 1700 Fallow Deer Northeast Greenland National Park Northeast Greenland National Park is the largest national park in the world with 15,000 musk oxen as well as numerous polar bears and walrus. This is claimed to be 40% of the world population of musk ox. Other mammals include arctic fox, collared lemming and arctic hare. Marine mammals include different species of seals, narwhal and Beluga whale.

Danish Ecological Projects In the summer of 2011 Copenhagen hosted one of the largest outdoor art exhibitions held in Denmark. The centre of attention were 102 baby elephants made of fiberglass, decorated by Danish and international artists and designers.

650 people were gathered at the Grand Auction at the Hotel Scandic Copenhagen. The result was 4.3mln

.

Danish kroner in total. This money is used for saving Asian Elephants.

Environmental Protection Getting Involved

We visited the Zoo, Zoological Museum, Aquarium and the Botanical Garden in Copenhagen because we are interested in the life of animals, fish and plants. Discussing the attitude of Danish people to wildlife we get involved in environmental protection.

We take care of animals, plant flowers round our school, buy recycled and make reusable things. We try not to waste water and paper, save energy turning off TV, video players, computers when we don’t use them and turning off the light when we leave the room. We keep our windows and doors closed when it is cold. We are getting used to riding our bicycles instead of going by buses and cars.

Wind Power in Denmark Wind turbines are popular with people in Denmark. The Danes were pioneers in developing commercial wind power. Today almost half of the wind turbines around the world are produced by Danish manufacturers such as the 10-th place in the world for power operated wind farm. Denmark’s new energy plan aims to end reliance on fossil fuels by 2050, replacing them with wind power and biomass. The changes would mean green economy.

Vestas . In 2010 Denmark took Joint Russian-Danish Center for Energy Efficiency The objectives of Russian-Danish Energy Center RuDanEnergo are the development of Russian-Danish cooperation of government agencies and private businesses, support for Danish companies in the Russian market and promoting localization of Danish technologies in Russia.

Eco Houses Eco-innovation is a significant element of the measures designed to protect the environment, helping to address both national and global challenges.

Villa Vision is a high technology Danish eco-house self-sufficient in heating and electricity with minimal water consumption and recycling waste too. It contains all the electronic forms of entertainment including CD stereo, TV and Internet connected computer. It has solar cells, water taps which you program for the exact water required, light sensors that turn off light if there is no movement in a room, sensors that move outside shades (like petals around a flower) whenever the sun is too strong or open and close windows for programmed climate control. Its waste water system treats water through a root zone ecosystem.

Eco Village Europe's largest environmental village Stenloze was built not far from Copenhagen.

Recycled nails and timber were used for the construction of the cottages.

The houses are provided with low cost energy due to the latest technology in heat and light. Solar panels on the roof warm the cottage and the water. There is enough sunshine in every home which has a healthy indoor climate and interacts with its environment. People wash using morning dew and rainwater which is conserved and used for everything from showers, laundry and watering the garden. Each cottage consumes only 34 kW/h per square meter per year due to enhanced thermal insulation. 750 homes saved 18 million kW/h during 5 years. In summer the residents of these cottages sell surplus electricity to the power company.
