What is Sakai?
 A Foundation that began as a project with a grant from
Carnegie Melon
 An emerging community of people and resources
supporting the code and each other, realizing large scale
open source efficiencies in higher education (80
Universities in 10 countries + 10 Commercial Affiliates).
 An extensible framework for collaborative development
- providing basic capabilities to support a wide range of
tools and services for teaching and research
 Standards based - JSR-168, OKI OSIDS, IMS
 A product with:
 A released bundle of the framework
 A set of tools written and supported by various groups and individuals;
tested and released as a unit

Sakai 2.1 is due Nov/Dec
 A Common API
portion of Framework II
 Hierarchy for sections and groups
 Improved enterprise integration w/ OSIDs
 WSRP portal integration
 A uniform storage approach (OSPI & Sakai)
 IMS tool interoperability launcher
IMS Tool Portability Group
Goal is ‘interoperability’ for CMS’s/CLE’s
Focus is on making tools portable between
systems (Sakai, WebCT, and Blackboard)
Established to further the discussion with
commercial and other CMS/CLE providers
Will use web services and IFRAMES
The Future of Sakai
 Initial grant ends December 2005


Initial project 4 core schools ($4.4M)
Grant funding ($2.7 M)
 Transition to Community Source




The SEPP is renamed “Sakai Foundation” (1-2 million/year)
Governance is merit-based (like Apache)
Community funded team (~10) for core maintenance & evolution
Expect new tool development from SEPP
•
•

Optimistic outlook: 80 * 2 = 140 tool developers
Pessimistic outlook: 80 * .5 = 35 tool developers
Continued in-kind resources UofM, Indiana, Yale, Foothill,
Stanford, and Berkeley
