The English Education System
• Education in England is divided into primary (5-11),
secondary (11-16), further (16-18) and higher education
(18+).
• Compulsory education lasts for 11 years from 5-16 years.
• Most pupils transfer from primary to secondary school at the
age of 11.
• Most secondary schools in England are comprehensive and do not
operate a selective entrance system. However, in some parts of
England, a grammar school system also operates and pupils are
usually required to pass an entrance examination based on their
ability.
• Some parents choose to send their children to private schools.
8% of school children in England attend a private school. The
parents have to pay for private education.
• At age 16 students can leave school but most go to college to do
vocational or academic courses.

Science at Stringer
• Students have 6 one hour lessons every 2
weeks in the first 3 years
• They study equal amounts of Biology,
Chemistry and Physics.
• All pupils must continue to study these 3
sciences from ages 14 to 16. They must study
at least 5 hours every 2 weeks, but over 80%
chose to study 10 hours. This will give them 2
or 3 science qualifications at age 16

How do we teach Science at Dorothy Stringer?
• There is always a large emphasis on science
investigations. Students are encouraged to make
their own conclusions from data obtained
• Recently there has been an increasing emphasis on
“How Science Works”. Pupils study how science is
used, and reported on, in society. They develop an
understanding of the ethical issues involved.
• Examples include our use of energy resources, and
issues such as cloning and stem cell research
