Grade 11 Information Meeting
YOU’RE ALMOST THERE…
Terms:
Potential Graduate = Grade 12 student = Senior = Class of 2016
-To be a potential graduate, in the fall of 2015 you will need to have at
least seven credits.
-To be a graduate in June 2016, you will need to have at least 17
credits altogether, including:
English 11(2 credits)
a science course
English 12
a fine arts or a life role course
Math 11
5 of the 17 credits at the grade 12
Modern History 11
level
*You must have successfully completed or be exempted from the ELPA.
SUMMER SCHOOL 2015
-Need a course to be a potential grad?
-Summer school opportunity being offered in Fredericton at
Bliss Carmen Middle School from June 29-July 31.

WHAT CAN I EXPECT IN GRADE 12?
For the most part, your daily routine will be much like grade 11.
However, there will be added responsibilities as a grade 12
student.
Like what???
The path to graduation has many “to do” items.
- Apply for a Social Insurance Number if you haven’t already
- Paying your grad fees early in the year
- Cap & Gown pictures for yearbook and composite
- Grad write ups and superlatives
- Ordering your grad ring, yearbook, hoodie
- Applying for scholarships (everyone is encouraged to apply)
- Registering for safe grad
- Attending various information sessions
- Implementing your post graduation plan
As you embark on implementing your plan there are many
individuals along the path that can offer advice and information:
- teachers
-your parents
-guidance counsellor
-employers
-post-secondary advisors (AARAO Tour October 20th, 2015)

to do after high school ?”

Have an exit plan that works for you
You’ve been thinking and working on what you want to do after high
school for a while. Some of you are sure, and some of you are not.
Let’s explore some options:
work
apprenticeship
college
university
Canadian Armed Forces
Work option –
Some students choose to work after school:
1) to save $ to attend college or university.
2) or to work permanently.
Youth Employment Fund Program:
- aren’t interested in college or university
- you create a work plan, and an employment counsellor sets up a place for you to work
- the program pays for you to work for 26 weeks, with the idea that you learn the skills of that job, and
then you stay on with that employer afterward

CANADIAN ARMED FORCES
There are over 100 career opportunities available to all of you:
-full-time career
-part-time jobs
-these jobs are available coming right out of high school, college, or university
- you are fully trained by the Canadian Armed Forces, and all the training is equal to college or university
training you would get elsewhere
-you are also paid for this training
In Canada, Colleges and Universities can offer similar sounding programs, but their approach
to education is different.
University:
- focuses strongly on academics and research
- programs take four years for a Bachelor’s degree
- Bachelor’s degree = undergraduate degree
- includes subjects like Science, Math, English, History, Business and contemporary studies.
College:
- focuses on practical experience that can teach you skills specific to a particular career.
- programs usually take one to two years
- students generally finish with a certificate or diploma.
- options are community college (ex. NBCC) or private colleges (Oulton, Holland, East Coast
Trades, etc.)
NBCC is a community college with various locations around New Brunswick. They operate on a “first
qualified, first accepted” basis, meaning, the first people to apply get in as long as they meet the
requirements. There are only so many seats available in each program. Once the seats are filled
up, then they will be put on a waiting list.
There is a new priority application date = June 1st
If you want to apply to NBCC, it is suggested to do so on June 1st. This does not mean that you
cannot apply after this date. It just means that you are more likely to get a seat in the program
you choose.

There are 54 apprenticeable trades in NB
Parts person
motor vehicle body repairer
Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic
Truck and Transport Mechanic
Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Electrician
Apprenticeship Information
Apprenticeship means you work with a certified employer to learn the trade. You
have to put in a certain amount of hours. Most of the trades require 72 hours of
apprenticeship.
2 ways to apprentice:
1) Once you graduate you can register as an apprentice. You can work with an
employer you want to do that trade in (they must be certified). You receive a wage,
and you gain the practical experience.
Then, the apprenticeship program sends you to school to get the theory part of
learning (they fund your schooling).
2) You can apply and go to college, complete your diploma, and then complete the
apprenticeship program.
START PREPARING NOW
- research (continue)
- communicate with your parents (ongoing)
- book an appointment with guidance to get more information
- this summer, contact universities and colleges you are interested in attending, and go for campus
tours. They would LOVE to have you come for a tour.
- review your prerequisites for college and university to ensure you are in the proper courses you need
(search the websites or call to clarify)
- talk to people in the workforce and ask them all about their careers. Speak to employers.
- try to get a summer job and save some $
- volunteer when possible. Keep track of your volunteer hours. If you can, volunteer at something you
are interested in possibly pursuing.

-Have a backup plan (don’t put all your eggs in one basket)
--apply to early admissions
--book an appointment with guidance
--go on campus tours and attend open houses, they are really helpful
--search university and college websites
--listen to announcements and meet with advisors and representatives when they come
to visit CNHS
--enjoy your last year and leave CNHS with an action plan
