Changes in Estimates
Because depreciation is based on the
estimated useful life and estimated
salvage value, depreciation expense is
an estimate.

If the useful life or salvage value of an
asset changes, we must revise
depreciation expense for the current
and future periods. (i.e., prospectively
not retroactively.)
 For this change in accounting estimate,
we spread the remaining undepreciated
cost (book value) over the remaining
useful life - like peanut butter.

