Roman children played games like children nowadays. But the
childhood today is completely different from this of former days
because of the electronic possibilities, which can be used without any
restriction.
Many people are thinking, that there was another kind of playing in
ancient Rome.
But that is not right: The kids had also dolls, carts, animal figures,
stalks and kites.
Today people believe that the game culture of former days was not
highly developed, but it was – and many games which exist nowadays
have their origin in ancient times. The famous games from the kids of
all ages were Mühle, Backgammon, Käsekästchen, a preform of Schach,
Murmelspiele as well as by the ball games Hockey, the catch games
Blinde Kuh and Reiterkampf.
Examples:
Dreierball
Three players line up in a triangle and throw three little balls to each other at the same time. If
someone let a ball fall down, he looses one of his five lifes. The game ends, when one of the players
lost all his lives.
Hockey
A game for two temas with at least two players each.
One small ball, 4 marks for the goal and one hockey bat for every player.
Set the marks for the goals and build teams. Each team tries to hit the ball into the goal. Only the
goalkeeper is allowed to touch the ball with his feet.
Ballschleudern (mit Hund)
The player throws a ball as far as possible and the dog runs to get it and returns it to the player.
Examples:
Drei
A board with each 3 black and 3 white gamestones is set up. After placement the stones will
be pushed until one player has 3 stones of his color in a row.
Rundmühle
Alternately each player sets his gamestones on the board and tries to get 3 in a row. Each time he gets
a „Mühle“ he can take one gamestone away from the other player when his are not in a row of three.
Zwölferspiel
A player throws the dice and moves his stones in the amount of his dice on the board.
They continue alternately. If someone comes to a field on the board which is already takes by
another players stone you can put it back to the beginning of the board and that player has to start all
over.
Examples:
Blinde Kuh (Bronzefliege)
One player gets gets tied a scarf around his eyes. The other players get
paperwhips. The „Blinde Kuh“ tries to catch the other players while they
whip her with the paperwhips. The one that gets cought is the next „Blinde Kuh“.
Reiterkampf
There are formed two teams, one player in each team gets tied a scarf around his eyes and the other
one climbs on his back. The riders steer their horses as quickly as possible around the target point and
back to the starting point.
Reifentreiben
You stuck spits in the ground as a start- and targetpoint.Than you set up the hoop and try to turn it
with a stick around the spit back to the targetpoint.
Pentelitha
You throw 4 bonelets on the ground. The last one you have in your
hands you throw up in the air. While its in the air you grab one from the
ground and catch the one thats in the air. You do that till you have all
five in your hands.
Examples:
Delta
With a stick you carve a starting line and in 2 - 3 m distance a triangle in the ground,
divided by horizontal lines in ten fields.
The players throw their nuts on the field.
The largest field that is located closest to the starting line gets one point, each next
higher plus one point. The smallest top box is ten points. The points are added.
Once each player has thrown five times, the game is over. Whoever has the
most points wins.
Kastellspiel
Each player places 3 nuts in a triangle close together.
Then the players drop a nut from the top trying to have the nut remaining on
the others.
Schräge Ebenenspiel
You let some nuts roll down a scew plane trying to hit other nuts laying on the ground.
You make points by hitting other nuts.
