WARM-UP

In Romeo and Juliet, Juliet says,

What is the difference between a
prejudice and a stereotype?
PREJUDICE

Prejudice: a preconceived opinion
that is not based on reason or
actual experience. It is based
solely on a person’s membership
within a certain group/aspect of
identity, and as a result, you either
favor or disfavor that person.
◦ Ex: Not hiring someone because they
are male/female.
STEREOTYPE

Stereotype: a fixed image or idea
of a particular type of person or
thing. It involves generalizations
about the “typical” characteristics
of members in that group.
◦ Ex: Assuming the newly hired male
kindergarten teacher won’t be that
good, because he’s a male, and
therefore not as nurturing.
