Why we believe
baptism must be immersion
I. Baptism is a Burial
Baptism is a Burial
Rom 6:3-4
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His
death?
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism
into death, that just as Christ was raised from the
dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also
should walk in newness of life.
Baptism is a Burial
Col 2:11-12
11 In Him you were also circumcised with the
circumcision made without hands, by putting off the
body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of
Christ,
12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were
raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who
raised Him from the dead.
Baptism is a Burial
Bury: “To conceal by or as if by covering with earth….To
place (a dead body) in a grave, a tomb, or the sea…To
cover from view…” (AHD)

baptisma (noun) / baptizo (verb)
1. baptisma NT:908, "baptism," consisting of the
processes of immersion, submersion and emergence
(from bapto, "to dip"), is used (a) of John's "baptism," (b)
of Christian "baptism," see B. below; (c) of the
overwhelming afflictions and judgments to which the Lord
voluntarily submitted on the cross, e. g., Luke 12:50; (d) of
the sufferings His followers would experience, not of a
vicarious character, but in fellowship with the sufferings of
their Master. Some mss. have the word in Matt 20:22-23;
it is used in Mark 10:38-39, with this meaning.

baptisma (noun) / baptizo (verb)
baptizo NT:907, "to baptize," primarily a frequentative form
of bapto, "to dip," was used among the Greeks to signify
the dyeing of a garment, or the drawing of water by
dipping a vessel into another, etc. Plutarchus uses it of the
drawing of wine by dipping the cup into the bowl (Alexis,
67) and Plato, metaphorically, of being overwhelmed with
questions (Euthydemus, 277 D).
