Thus at the Chicago 1983 Supreme Convention the delegation adopted the by-laws of the Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc. The Foundation was mandated to promote the social, ethical, philanthropic, cultural, education and intellectual interests of its members while preserving and promoting the ideals and traditions of Hellenism and supporting the programs and goals of the Daughters of Penelope. The Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc. is a 501(c)3 charitable public foundation, governed by their own by-laws and Board of Directors. The Foundation has a fiduciary responsibility to raise and maintain funds to ensure that funds will be available to provide for these special programs now and in the future. All of this is achieved through the generous support of the Chapters, Districts, individual members, private and public donors as well as the fundraising efforts of the Foundation. The members of the Foundation are all voluntaries and are not compensated; as a matter of fact many donate out of their pockets to offset operational costs and diligently work to raise funds. Under the direction of the Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc. to date the Daughters of Penelope has granted over $350,000 in scholarship awards to women involved and/or related to the AHEPA Family and graduates of St. Basil Academy. The Daughters of Penelope Foundation, Inc. has been mandated with the responsibility to: • • • • • Promote the Scholarship Program Acquire Funds for New Scholarships Steward Scholarship Funds Maintain Historical Information Relating to Scholarships Enhance the Scholarship Program In 2012, the number of scholarship awards available were twenty-three, with fifteen being perpetual scholarship awards and eight being annual scholarship awards. In 2013, due to the generosity of donations we were able to increase our scholarship awards to twenty-four as well as increase some of the monetary values, with fifteen being Perpetual Scholarships and nine Annual Scholarships. In 2014, an additional perpetual scholarship award will be available and the Foundation is currently working towards four more perpetual awards, with one being an Alumni Scholarship. Information will be forthcoming. Our goal and purpose is to increase scholarship awards so that hopefully, someday we will have enough scholarships to give to each young lady who applies for a scholarship award. Further, it is our duty to insure that there are funds available for the scholarships for future generations. Underwriting a Scholarship: Individuals, Chapters and Districts can underwrite a scholarship in honor or memory of their name choice. There are two types of scholarships, an Annual Award and a Perpetual Award. Annual Scholarships are established on a yearly basis and can be renewed. Unlike a Perpetual Scholarship, an Annual Scholarship is not a permanent fund. The life span of this scholarship fund will be determined by the amount of the initial gift, subsequent donations, interest, and by the frequency and amount of the award. The minimum gift is $1,000. Perpetual Scholarships are established by a donation which guarantees that a contribution will live on in perpetuity because the sum is protected and only the interest is used to fund yearly scholarships. A minimum gift of $30,000 establishes a Perpetual Scholarship it may be paid in one lump sum or paid over time. What is the Bridges Incentive Grant Program? This new program was established in 2013 to recognize and support local and district incentives that would build a bridge between the Daughters of Penelope and the communities we live in, while promoting the ideals of the Daughters of Penelope through community service and family excellence The Foundation will recognize a select number of exemplary programs/projects that benefit a local qualified 501(c)3 organization within your chapter or district area. The chapters and districts selected as grant recipients will have a matching grant donation up to $250 donated by the Foundation in their name to their qualified 501(c)3 organization. All applicants not selected are encouraged to reapply for the awards in the next call for proposals. What are the Program’s Goals? To strengthen our bonds in our local communities bridging the gap between the Daughters of Penelope and the communities we live in To reward and encourage creativity and innovation in the Daughters of Penelope To perpetuate the works of our Order at the grass roots level To promote volunteering, charitable giving and family excellence To motivate and inspire membership participation To stimulate the development of new ideas What Kind of Projects will the Foundation Support? The Foundation will support unique civic, cultural, educational or charitable programs that benefit a qualified 501(c)3 organization within the local chapter or district area. The projects selected must be implemented and completed by the deadline of each year and have the potential to radiate excellence. By this, we mean that the project should lend itself to serving as a model for other chapters or districts to adapt, modify, or replicate, thereby strengthening the entire organization. The selected 501(c)3 organization should be in existence for a minimum of 5 years. Endowment, Memorial and Tribute Gifts Endowment Gifts Memorial and Tribute Gifts • The Foundation gratefully accepts all endowments gifts. The principal of these gifts will be preserved. Endowment gifts are invested and the income earned helps support the Foundation’s services and programs. • A monetary gift to the Foundation can be made in memory of or in honor of a special person, family or group. Your gift will be tax deductable to the full extent permitted by applicable law and you will receive the proper documentation for tax purposes. Biennial Symposium A series of lectures are offered during the Supreme Convention enlisting the service of prominent authors, sociologists, musicians, historians, young scientists and law enforcement officers, exploring the subjects of contemporary interest. It is open to members of the AHEPA family and the general public. District Governor’s Seminar District Governor’s Seminar 2012 The Foundation assists the Grand President and her lodge by underwriting for a guest speaker to address the new District Governors at the annual District Governor’s Seminar. Literacy Projects Our Mission: • To promote reading for young and old alike • To promote education through literature • To build community relations • To contribute books to local libraries, schools, hospitals and shelters • To celebrate authors of Hellenic Descent BOOK CLUB To Love, Life and Laughter! Each month, The Daughters of Penelope Foundation Book Club offers a Main Selection, a Greek Selection, and a Just For Fun/Gift Selection to our members…and anyone interested in books! Selections include fiction, mystery, memoirs and history in addition to some very special cookbooks, gardening guides, great beach reads ( or something to curl up by the fire with), and humor, too. You don’t have to be a member of a local club to take advantage of these offerings…but think how much more enjoyment you would get from talking over a great book you’ve just read with a friend or three. The following month, after you’ve had time to read and think about the story, the DOP Foundation website will offer a list of questions about the previous month’s selections, to get your Book Club’s discussions started. HOW TO JOIN IN? Simple! Just go to www.dopfoundationinc.com There you’ll find fields to enter your name and email address. Every month you can check the website for recommended books, discussion questions, and a corner where you can send us your comments And here’s the best part….you can order books, right from the website, using the links provided. No running to the store. The Foundation has an arrangement with Amazon and Barnes and Noble whereby a portion of the price of each book ordered comes back to the Scholarship Fund which should make you feel especially warm and fuzzy. Two birds with one….er, order! If you have an iPad, Kindle or Nook, or any other e-reader, you can download directly to your device. How easy is that? HOW TO START A BOOK CLUB Starting a book club can take some time and effort, but if you are patient and persistent, it can be a wonderful experience. Book clubs afford you the opportunity to make new friends and engage in thought-provoking conversation; it’s also a great way to discover new books that you have not yet read. 1. Set guidelines. The first thing you will need to do is decide how your club will operate. Pick a day and time to meet each month, and decide where your club will meet. 2. Get the word out. Ask close friends to join, and see if some of your co-workers are interested. Ask people at your gym or at church. Try not to get discouraged if it takes a little longer than you thought to form a steady membership. 3. Hold meetings. Even if you don’t get a good turnout at first, keep having meetings as planned. Don’t try to reorganize meetings around any one member’s schedule, as this will ultimately cause conflict. 4. Keep an open mind and listen to all new ideas. Don’t dominate the conversation. Allow a different member to lead the discussion each month. 5. Continue to invite new members to join the club. You should always encourage its growth. Ask members to bring along a friend, just for the evening; that friend may end up becoming a loyal member. REMEMBER-Have Fun!!!! The point is to meet people, discover – or rediscover – the joys of reading and participate in discussion that includes a range of opinions and insights. If you have non-members of The Daughters who want to join as well, the Book Club may prove to be a fine tool to attract new membership in your Daughters of Penelope Chapter..
