Transcript THE ANCIENT OLMYPICS - Wyre Forest School Sport Partnership

OBJECTIVE/OUTCOME
• We would like our school to create its own
‘Olympic Truce' wall, made up of tiles
(12x12cm/15x15cm) designed by
you (pupils), that illustrate what friendship,
respect and equality in PE/sport means to us.
• Some of the Truce Tiles from our school will
be displayed along the official Torch Relay
route in May.
OBJECTIVE/OUTCOME
• The Olympic Truce aims to promote friendship,
respect and understanding across the world
through sport and culture.
• The Olympic Truce is a commitment between all the
countries to show respect to each other and to be
peaceful for seven days before and after The
Games.
• The Olympic Truce means uniting the world
together and bringing countries together, making
sure that everyone’s equal.

THE ANCIENT OLMYPICS
• The exact origins of the Games are shrouded
in myth and legend but records indicate that
they began in 776 BC in Olympia in Greece.
• The Games were usually held every four years,
or Olympiad, as the unit of time came to be
known.
• During a celebration of the Games, an Olympic
Truce was enacted so that athletes could travel
from their countries to the Games in safety.
THE MODERN OLYMPICS
• The Modern Olympic Games were founded in 1894
by Baron Pierre de Coubertin ; a French
educationist.
• His aim was to promote international harmony and
understanding through sporting competition.
• He strongly believed in the Olympic ideal that even
enemies could be united in sporting competition.
• The Olympic Games despite difficult times in the
recent past have been a great link between nations
and people of different faiths, culture and
backgrounds.
THE OLYMPIC OATH
• "In the name of all competitors, I promise we
shall take part in these Olympic Games,
respecting and abiding by the rules which govern
them, committing ourselves to a sport without
doping and without drugs, in the spirit of true
sportsmanship, for the glory of sport and the
honor of our teams."
THE 5 RINGS
• The five rings represent the five major regions
of the world: Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe,
and Oceania.
• Every national flag in the world includes at least
one of the five colors, which are: (from left to
right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red
THE OLYMPIC FLAME
• The Flame is lit in Greece and, after a short relay
around Greece, is delivered to the Host Country,
where it is transferred from one Torchbearer to
another, spreading the message of peace, unity
and friendship.
• It ends its journey as the last Torchbearer lights
the cauldron at the Olympic Games Opening
Ceremony in the Olympic Stadium, marking the
official start of the Games.
• The torch will be coming through
the Wyre Forest!
