• Spent most of her childhood
and young age in France
• Married a French Dauphin –
became the Queen
• Her husband died soon – she
returned to Scotland
• Married her cousin Lord
Darnley – unhappy marriage
• Darnley murdered in the
garden – suspected Earl of
Bothwell – Mary married him

• The Scots rose against her –
made her abdicate in favour of
her 1 year old son James
• Mary escaped to England – her
cousin Elizabeth welcomed her
• Elizabeth`s ministers warned

a legitimate sovereign of England
by many Catholics
• Mary was kept prisoner for 8.5
years – beheaded for treason
• Elizabeth and Mary never met

Discuss the sentences and correct them
1. Henry VIII married six times because he did not like his
wives.
2. Mary put Elizabeth in the Tower because she got on
badly with her.
3. People were very unhappy when Mary died.
4. Elizabeth became the “virgin “Queen because there
was nobody to marry her.
5. Elizabeth was very angry when Francis Drake attacked
Spanish ships.
6. The Pope had an argument with Henry VIII because he
was not christened.
