 SuperSearch
SuperSearch is the Library’s new search tool. It is a
discovery layer for the CY O’Connor Institute Library’s
collection of resources.
For more detailed information on how to use the
SuperSearch go to the “Library Home Page” then go
to “Information Literacy” then click on Guide to
SuperSearch.

 Databases
The Library subscribes to a variety of databases through consortia that
provide information on books, dissertations, articles in journals,
magazines, newspapers, and other materials. Full text is available from
many of our databases. The databases are now easily accessible both
on campus and via remote access by clicking on the database name
and typing in the required information.
For further details on how to explore and research using the databases
go to the Information Literacy section of the “Library Home Page.”
Alternately, you may call the Library Supervisor, Digna P. Verlinden at
(08) 96226740 for assistance.

What classification scheme is
used in the CYOCI library?
The library uses the Dewey Decimal
Classification Scheme (DDC) to arrange books
and other library materials on the shelves so
they may be easily retrieved. It is used in many
libraries and places items with a similar subject
together on the shelve.

What classification scheme is
used in the CYOCI library?
How does the Dewey Decimal system work?
DDC is an hierarchical number system that organizes all human knowledge
into ten main categories. These are:
000
Generalities (includes computing)
100
Philosophy
200
Religion
300
Social Sciences
400
Languages
500
Natural sciences and mathematics
600
Technology (applied science)
700
The arts
800
Literature
900
Geography and history

What classification scheme is
used in the CYOCI library?
How does the Dewey Decimal system work?
Each main category is then divided into ten sub-categories. For example:
500
Natural sciences and mathematics
510
Mathematics
520
Astronomy
530
Physics
540
Chemistry
550
Earth Sciences
560
Paleontology
570
Life sciences
580
Plants (Botany)
590
Animals (Zoology)

How does the Dewey Decimal system work?
Each sub-category is then divided into ten specific topics. For example:
530
Physics
531
Solid mechanics
532
Fluid mechanics
533
Pneumatics
534
Sound
535
Light
536
Heat
537
Electricity and electronics
538
Magnetism
539
Modern physics

What classification scheme is
used in the CYOCI library?
How does the Dewey Decimal system work?
Each of these topics may be further divided into more specific subject areas.
A decimal point is used after the first three digits to separate the specific
subjects – it also makes the numbers easier to read. You will see that as the
subject becomes more specific, so does the numbering. For example:
Sound and related vibrations
534.1
Generation of sound
534.2
Transmission of sound
534.22 Transmission in solids
534.23 Transmission in liquids

What classification scheme is
used in the CYOCI library?
Finding items on the shelves
The shelfmark will always have at least three numbers, followed by some
letters. It is usually displayed on the spine of the item, but is sometimes
placed on the front cover. Here are some examples:
361.
3
HIG
382.
63
COC
576
JON
599.
935
PHI
647.
94421
LON
823.
914
BAI/B
The DDC system places items about the same subject at the same number.
This means that once you have identified the DDC number for the subject you
are interested in, you can browse the shelves at that number.

What classification scheme is
used at CYOCI library?
Finding items on the shelves
On each shelf the items are arranged in a numerical sequence from left to
right by their DDC number. Where several items have an identical DDC
number, the letters are used to further arrange them. For Example:
361.
3
HIG
361.
32
BOR
361.
32
STO
363.
35
CIV
363.
377
PRE
