Stellaluna
By: Janell Cannon
Thomas Flammini
Brief Overview
•
•
•
•
Stellaluna is a bat who was separated from her mother
She found refuge in a bird’s nest as she was failing from the sky
She was adopted by the mother bird and her three babies
Stellaluna learned how
to be a bird
Brief Overview
•
•
•
•
•
Once she grew older, Stellaluna realized how different she was
She set off one night, and coincidentally met bats for the first time
This is when she was reunited with her mother
The birds and Stellaluna accepted their differences
They all lived happily ever after
Tuckman’s Theory: Forming
•
•
•
“Stellaluna learned to be like the birds. She stayed awake all day and
slept at night.”
“Get back up here this instant! You’re going to fall and break your
necks!”
Stellaluna did not feel as though she was part of the group
o she is treated as a stranger
Interdependent Teamwork
•
•
•
•
•
Group members rely on each other to accomplish a task
Stellaluna brings the birds out for a night flight, but they can’t see like
her!
She guides them to safety.
Takes full responsibility of her “family”
Accepts her differences from the birds
Positive Leadership Attitudes:
Empathy
•
•
•
•
•
Mama bird’s willingness to accept a new, foreign being
o Understood Stellaluna’s circumstances
As leaders, we strive to be empathetic
with our groups
Understand our group members, and
where they are coming from
Influence continual learning (Mama bird
showed Stellaluna how to eat and fly as
a bird, because that’s the only way she
knows)
Stellaluna was still happy
Maintaining Diversity
•
•
•
Stellaluna grows older, and explores her differences instead of bottling
them up. She still wants to be a bat, even though she lives with birds.
o Hangs from her feet, doesn’t enjoy eating bugs, uses her night
vision.
Acknowledge your differences among group members!
Accept diversity and differences to reach ultimate cohesion!
Functional Group Roles:
Harmonizing
•
•
•
•
•
Harmonizer: mediates differences, reduces tension, gives others a
chance to explore their differences.
“Stellaluna was confused. Mama Bird told me I was upside down. She
said I was wrong…”
“Wrong for a bird, maybe, but not for a bat.”
Stellaluna meets a harmonizer, this is when she can finally relate to
another bat!
She is reunited with her mother from the harmonizer!
o The harmonizer tells Stellaluna it’s ok to do bat things and bird
things
o They fly through the night and eat delicious fruit like a bat should
Family Connections
•
•
•
We all work interdependently
at home - rely on each other
to keep the house in order.
Accepting of everyone’s
individuality to maintain
diversity
Group roles continually change
o information giver/seeker,
energizer, opinion giver,
blocker, encourager
Family Dynamics
•
•
•
•
Be kind and accepting to others
Welcome new individuals with open arms, but set ground rules
Decision making is a long,
tedious process.
Consensus does NOT rule everything is at the
jurisdiction of the two
eldest group leaders
