National 3, 4 and 5
 All S4 pupils sit 6 National qualifications at either Nat
3, 4 or 5
 Pupils will receive a target grade for each subject
stating the level to be sat in a Target Report at the
beginning of September
 Each National Course has up to 3 Units and each unit
is assessed and must be passed to complete the course
 Where a unit assessment is failed parents will be
notified of resit date by text
National 3
 Pupils must pass each unit
 There is no prelim or final exam
 The result will show as a pass or fail
 Pupils who have additional arrangements eg use
digital papers, reader or scribe will get these for unit
assessments where required
National 4
 Pupils must pass each unit
 There is no prelim or final exam
 The result will show as a pass or fail
 Pupils who have additional arrangements eg use
digital papers, reader or scribe will get these for unit
assessments where required
 Pupils will also sit an added value unit which assesses
all aspects of the course
National 5
 Pupils must pass each unit
 There is a prelim and final exam
 The result will show as a an A,B,C or D which are all a
pass.
 Pupils who have additional arrangements eg use
digital papers, reader or scribe will get these for unit
assessments, prelims and final exams where required
 Pupils will also sit Course Assessment which assesses
all aspects of the course eg Practical or
Assignment/Project style
National 5
 All National 5 pupils also complete the National 4
Added Value Unit and should they fail the final exam
the added Value Unit pass will be sent to SQA in
August/September following the exam and a National
4 pass will be awarded
Prelims
 National 5 Prelims are in week 27th to 31st Jan
 Pupils who have 4, 5 or 6 National 5s will be off all
week
 Where a pupil only has 1,2 or 3 National 5s they should
stay off the day before their prelim and just come in for
the prelim on the day of the prelim
 Pupils sitting only National 3s or 4s should attend
school and classes all week
Final exams
 These start 29th April and all are complete by 30th May
 Pupils should stay off the day before their exam and
just come in for the exam on the day of the exam
 Pupils sitting only National 3s or 4s should attend
school and classes during these dates.
 New S5 timetable will start on May 12th so pupils
should attend as listed above.
Changing Levels
 All pupils will receive a tracking report in November
which will show an updated Target Grade, a working
grade showing how they are doing at the current time
and a grade for Effort, Behaviour and Homework.
 Teachers will comment stating what the pupil needs to
do to achieve the target set
 If a pupil is not attaining as expected they may be
moved down a level to National 3 or 4 but parents will
be sent a letter to discuss this
 Alternatively where a pupil is doing better than
expected they may be moved up to National 4 or 5 and
again a letter will be sent to parents
S4 final report
 These will be issued 25th Feb
 Will include updated Target Grade, Working Grade
and an Effort, Behaviour and Homework Grade
 Teachers will comment on what each pupil needs to do
to achieve their target
 Some level changes may be recommended in the
report but will be discussed with parents at Parent’s
Night

Booklet
 Highlight your child’s subjects and level in the book so
you are aware during which months they will have unit
assessments
 National 5 pupils note prelim and final exam dates
Learner’s Journey
 These will be discussed further at Option Choice time
but use this booklet to see the possible progression
routes
 Typically pupils sitting National 3s or 4s in subjects can
try the National 4 or 5 level in S5 but may be better to
widen their selection of subjects and try another
subject.
 Pupils who have sat National 5s can move on to the
new Higher in this subject.
 Next session S4/5/6 will be timetabled
together
