Substantial Renovation
Facilities Construction Director will determine if architectural
drawings will be required.
 Projects require review:
– Projects renovate more than ten percent (10%) of any smoke
compartment.
– Change or alter medical gas or be classified as hazardous.
– Change or alter the existing life safety classification of the
building.
– Change or alter the construction type or life safety of the facility.
 Alter any of the following systems:

Exemption
 Areas renovated less than 10% of any smoke
compartment.
 Only one renovation shall be initiated in a single
year.
 No licensure deficiencies as of last State or Local
survey.
 Submit a statement of the project scope.
 All work shall be executed in accordance with
currently adopted codes.

Locking Hardware
Locks shall be permitted on doors to prevent egress from areas where the
clinical needs of the patients require specialized care, provided staff can
readily unlock such doors at all times.
 (1) submit request, in writing to Bill Harmon,
Facilities Construction Director,
 (2) provide two copies of floor plan indicating
area to be secured and doors to be locked, and
 (3) provide two copies of manufacturer’s literature
to determine minimum standards and requirements
for installation of equipment.

Secured Unit
A facility or distinct part of a facility where the residents are intentionally
denied egress by any means. Nursing Home 1200-8-6-.01(57)
 If the facility wishes to have a secured unit
they must also submit a request in writing to
Ann Thompson, Director of Licensure.
