Stories after Easter
The Resistance funds a variety of local causes and needs on a regular basis. A good consistent
percentage of our weekly income goes to support the compassionate work of our Pockets of
Resistance in Stark County. Currently 26 – 30 people participate in a weekly Pocket.
INTERNATIONAL GIVING – GLOBAL
In addition we give 5% of our weekly offering to Destiny Rescue, a Christian-based
advocacy group for victims of sexual exploitation & slavery around the world, and
another 5% to the Nazarene World Evangelism Fund, which supports global
missionary/education/health care initiatives. We sponsor two children (Nepal & Haiti) and
are currently looking for more global partnerships.

SPEAKING OUR WAY THROUGH THE PSALMS. For the next year we will be speaking and
praying aloud together sections from two Psalms each week. Why? The regular praying and
reciting of the Psalms can be transformative. The Psalms encompass the totality of human
emotion and experience, from ecstatic joy to paralyzing depression. These words remind us
that we are creatures dependent upon a strong and capable Creator.
WHY WE SING. Music is an ancient, beautiful, and powerful form of expression. Now more
than ever, in our chaotic and frantic world we need good words on our lips: words that are
true, timeless and relevant for our day; we need words that have stood the test of time. We
regularly use music to express ourselves to God. We say thanks, we’re honest about what we
need, we confess, we lament, we celebrate, we find hope, and we do it together with one
voice. We all experience days and seasons where we don’t have the emotional energy or faith
to sing – in those instances, let the Church sing for you.
WHY WE GIVE. Giving is not about putting money in God’s hands as much as it is freeing us
from a sickness that lurks inside the hearts of all people. Giving is a powerful, counter-cultural,
subversive declaration that we are people of courageous faith and overflowing love for the
world.
WHY THE BREAD AND CUP. 1 Corinthians 11: 23 – 26: “For I received from the Lord what I
24
also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he
had given thanks, he broke it and said, "This is my body, which is for you; do this in
25
remembrance of me." In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, "This cup is the
26
new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me." For
whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.”
Once a ballerina was asked to explain what a certain dance meant. She said, “If I could explain
it, I wouldn’t have had to dance it.” So it is with Communion. 2,000 years after Jesus gave the
Church this meal, our best theologians have yet to find words to capture its meaning. What we
do understand, is that in an extraordinarily unusual way when the Church shares this meal,
Jesus is with us. We invite anyone who is a follower of Jesus Christ to participate in the gift of
this meal with us, regardless of church affiliation.
As you received a piece of bread, dip it into the cup and eat with a reverent, gracious
spirit. Parents may decide if their children will eat and drink – let the Church help you in that
decision if you wish. (we use non-alcoholic grape juice for Communion).
Resistance Labs are teaching environments where we come
together to declare that creation is good and God’s fingerprints can be found
on every inch of it. Labs are totally optional, one-hour classes meeting for
four weeks around a variety of subjects: parenting, marriage, fitness, personal
finance, home repair, beginner and advanced theology, etc. Our expert
teachers come right from our community: we share with one another the gifts
of knowledge and wisdom we’ve been given.
APRIL 6, 13, 27 & MAY 4, 7:45 – 8:45PM : Human Sexuality:
Conversations About God, the Church and Spirituality in an Evolving
Sexual World. Taught by Ben Lee.
June : God’s World: Our Responsibility. Taught by Diedre Haupt, Erik
Krantz, and Joey Nigro.

•The Resistance is praying about the purchase of a "fixer
upper" house in downtown Canton, that we may buy and
create a house for 4 - 6 Resistance members to live in, and
create a peaceful presence in Canton. If this communal living
appeals to you and you'd like more information, talk to Joey
Nigro.
Pockets of Resistance:
Our “Pockets of Resistance,” are central to our identity as a church.
These mid-sized groups find their identity in a network or
neighborhood where God has sent them to Perform the Peace of God
and together Being the Remedy for a world in peril.
We have 2 Pockets currently operating, one serving Wednesday
evenings at the local Pregnancy Support Center, and another
serving meals through the Tiqvah Ministry on Tuesday evenings.
For more information on Pockets, contact Joey Nigro, Director of
Pockets of Resistance: [email protected]
We are looking for 2-3 more volunteers to run PowerPoint on Sunday evenings.
This would require arriving at church around 5:40pm on Sunday nights. You
would be "on PowerPoint" for no more than 2 weeks in a row-and no more than
twice every 6 weeks. If you can click an arrow and want to help THERE'S A NEED!
Please contact Anna Furey at [email protected] .We are looking for
people to be able to start on the rotation starting May 4th.
We find our heritage in a generous, inclusive, global family, The Church of
the Nazarene. For more information about our partnerships with our parent
denomination, visit www.nazarene.org/beliefs
