CHILDREN'S ORPHANAGE - SHELTER
'PRIEDĪTE'
Orphanage - shelter “Priedīte” is the unit of Daugavpils
City Council’s, the Social Services Administration from
01.01.2011.
The shelter’s building started in the beginning of 70-s years.
The building construction was not completed. Some premises
still remain in incomplete condition.
There were no major repairs from the very beginning.
“Priedīte” is a local long-term social care and
social rehabilitation institution, which provides
day care to orphaned children without parental
care and children with different mental or physical
disabilities –
housing, rehabilitation, as well as children and
family’s reunification or acquisition of a new
family.



There are 100 children in our orphanage –
shelter, who are living here all time.
All children are in different age - from 2 till 18
years. As an exception children can live till 20
years if they study and receive secondary
education.
13 children have special needs, because of their
mental or physical disorders.
There are different specialists working with children: social
care specialist, social teacher, social rehabilitation expert,
medical nurses, nurses, cultural and sport event organizers.
Children must be prepared for future independent life outside
the orphanage walls. They are taught to cook, clean, spend
free time usefully and successfully communicate with people.
Children of the shelter study in various educational
institutions – kindergartens, basic schools, high
schools, professional schools and special schools.
Everyone gets education depending on the
abilities.
Free time spending is organized for children. There are various
events and festivals taking place in the orphanage.
This is necessary to ensure that children know traditions of our
country, and the basics of healthy recreation and helpful
entertainment.

Sports events
Trips to amusement parks
Excursions
Various charity organizations helped our orphanage. Not long
ago, new computers were donated to children.
While the “Day of Bread” event, kids got a big batch of this
tasty and necessary product from Red Cross organization, and
much more...
Large number of guests come to the “Priedīte” both local and people from other countries.
Everyone tries to bring a positive contribution in
the lives of our children.
The positive moment is that kids from complete families
also give the attention to orphans.
Joint tea parties are organized. During them children from
the orphanage can see a positive example of communication
between other children with their parents.


The orphanage-shelter “Priedīte” premises are
used for educational seminars of Children's
Rights Protecting organizations.
These activities are necessary to ensure that
children know their rights, know how to protect
themselves and that the orphanage workers
know how to protect children from possible
emotional and physical abuse.
“PRIEDĪTE” DOES NOT STAND STILL - IT
DEVELOPS, IMPROVES AND ENHANCES ITS
CONDITION


The technical project of energy audit was launched
recently to find out what takes heat from the building and
how we can change the situation - improve living conditions
of the children and to achieve real financial savings in
paying for heating.
The first money for the project to improve energy efficiency
are received - this project includes repairing of the roof,
windows and much more.
UNFORTUNATELY, NOT EVERYTHING IN THE
LIFE OF THE ORPHANAGE GOES WELL.
IN ADDITION TO BEAUTIFUL, COMFORTABLE,
RENOVATED ROOMS...
…THERE ARE NUMEROUS PROBLEMS WITH
REPAIRS…
TWO CHILDREN ROOM ARE NOT RENOVATED AT
ALL.
SANITARY UNITS ARE IN AN EMERGENCY
CONDITION.
Because of these conditions, the orphanage
cannot accept more children, despite the great
need for it: unfortunately there are many
children left without parental custody for various
reasons.


There is a big beautiful lake nearby the
“Priedīte”.
But there is no ehough money to build up
comfortable and safe beach for the children.


There are sports facilities and tennis courts at the
orphanage.
Almost all children are very interested in sports, so famous
sportsmen often come to visit them.
We need additional sport equipment – gyms, fitness
equipment and much more. There is also need for volleyball
court and sports trail.
If all necessary conditions are created, perhaps our
children will become football or other sports masters!
We would like to make a variety of creative
workshops, to train children skills necessary for
future life.
Appropriate equipment is necessary for that, but
the orphanage cannot afford to buy it.


There is room for sewing jobs, but no equipment
and tools for teaching sewing.
“Priedīte” has the support from Daugavpils
clothes sewing company. This company agrees to
give our children practice and teaching. But
children need to have basic knowledge, learn and
exercise regularly in the territory of the
orphanage.


The orphanage has the support from hairdressing
training centre, that agrees to give a practice for
girls, but hairdressing and makeup courses, mini
beauty salon are needed to be created in the
“Priedīte” too.
Girls will be taught to take care of themselves
and get the basics of this profession.
There is support from the Daugavpils building
school for the boys. Many graduates from our
orphanage successfully get education in that
school.
 It would be nice to have a woodworking machines
for effective education in the orphanage.



All the mentioned before would allow children
prepare for adult independent living and get
professional skills from an early age.
It would be nice if there were people willing to
sponsor the creative and intellectual potential of
children!
It should be said in conclusion that the main
reason of desire to improve the orphanage and to
strengthen cooperation with institutions – is to
educate our children in the conditions as close as
possible to the conditions of complete family.
The ultimate goal of our orphanage-shelter
“Priedīte” is to find a new family for a child and
prepare him for adoption.
Therefore, we must strive to create all
necessary conditions for a child to grow up
healthy and fully developed.
A child should go through a complete
psychological and physical rehabilitation, and
get into a good family as a happy and joyful
child!
