MIM PROGRAM OVERVIEW

• • • Information management (IM) draws on technology, information, and management to increase efficiency and promote innovation in a wide range of organizations.

IM is central to industry trends such as cloud computing, big data, business intelligence, and data analytics.

IM knowledge, skills, and credentials are central to jobs such as: • Chief Information Officer (CIO) • Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) • Chief Technology Officer (CTO) • Director of IT or IT Services • Business Intelligence Analyst • Business Analyst / Process Analyst • IT Consultant • Systems Project Manager • Information Architect • Data Scientist or Data Analyst • User Experience or Interface Developer • Legal Information Specialist

There is growing demand (and increasing salaries) for all of these positions – in spite of economic challenges.

 As an information management specialist you will work at the junction of technology, information, and management.

 Successful MIM graduates come from a variety of backgrounds, including:     Computer science Management (marketing, accounting, operations, finance, etc.) Information systems and technology Library and information sciences     Engineering (electrical, computer, mechanical, etc.) Communication, Media, and Journalism Humanities and Social sciences Medical and Health professions

PROGRAM CAMPUSES

 MIM courses are offered at two campuses and online. This provides you with access to the same course content and high-quality instructors in venues and locations that best meet your needs.  College Park  Shady Grove  Each of these offerings involves the same courses, the same requirements, and the same faculty – but in different forms and venues.

COLLEGE PARK CAMPUS

 The iSchool is located in the Hornbake Building of the University of Maryland College Park campus, which is also a house for the UMD Career Center and the iSchool research centers.  iSchool classrooms, research labs, and faculty offices are near the center of campus, close to parking, mass transit, and the Stamp Student Union. College Park campus proximity to Washington DC allows MIM students to benefit from the numerous professional development groups, events, and activities taking place there on a regular basis.

SHADY GROVE CAMPUS

 Is located in the Interstate 270 corridor in Rockville, Maryland.  Is easily accessible from I-270, the Intercounty Connector, and the Capital Beltway, making it convenient for students who live and work in Northern Virginia, Frederick, and throughout the Washington DC, metro area.  The Universities at Shady Grove offer state-of-the-art facilities, shuttles to and from College Park, and free parking.

Its location in the I-270 corridor gives students access to internship, employment, and professional development opportunities in one of Maryland’s fastest-growing areas.

MIM CURRICULUM

The goal of the MIM program is to develop your ability to recognize and realize opportunities to use information and technology to improve organizations.

 The MIM curriculum achieves this goal by providing you with:

Core Courses

• 12 credits • Broad knowledge of the technologies, design approaches, and management techniques for addressing information management problems

Internship & Capstone

• 6 credits • Internship and project-based learning experiences in which you integrate theory and practice to solve real-world information management problems Specializations • 15 credits • In depth study of one or more aspects of information management

MIM INTERNSHIP AND CAPSTONE

Practice applying and extending theories, technologies, and techniques to solve real world information management problems MIM Information Management Experience (INFM 736) • Provides a foundational understanding of high-impact information careers, mentoring, professional development and opportunity identification • Students work on internships at a range of for-profit, non-profit and research organizations MIM Capstone Experience (INFM 737) • Focuses on thought-leadership and client management skills • Recently students have worked on projects for World Bank, Encyclopedia of Life, General Dynamics, PriceWaterhouseCoopers and several entrepreneurial startups in the DC-Baltimore Area

MIM THESIS (OPTIONAL)

Practice conducting research that advances the state-of-the-art/state-of the-practice in information technology and management

Replaces  MIM Information Management Experience (INFM 736)  MIM Capstone Project (INFM 737) Identify a faculty advisor Inform MIM Coordinator of your thesis plan Take INST 701 Introduction to Research Methods Develop a proposal, thesis committee, and complete a research project (INFM 799 x 2)

MIM SPECIALIZATIONS

User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX)

- Focuses on designing and implementing user interfaces; - UI/UX designer, usability analyst, and front-end website developer.

Data Analytics (DA)

- Focuses on manipulation and mobilization of data for high-impact applications and decisions; - Data scientist, data analyst, or information analyst.

Organizational and Process Analysis (OPA)

- Focused on diagnosing and solving problems with critical organizational activities; - Business analyst, systems analyst, and process consultant.

Project Management (PM)

- Focuses on planning, leading, and executing projects; - Project manager, program manager, and consulting lead.

MIM SPECIALIZATIONS, CONT.

Curation and Management of Digital Assets (CMDA)

- Focuses on creating, managing, and preserving digital assets in a variety of sectors of the economy. - Digital asset manager, digital content specialist, or director of digital curation services

Information Management Research (IMR)

- Focuses on conducting research that advances the state-of-the-art/state-of-the-practice in information technology and management; advanced study in information science doctoral programs and careers in cutting-edge corporate or entrepreneurial environments - Students complete a master’s thesis (in place of the Internship and Capstone courses)

Strategic Management of Information (SMI)

- Focuses on the managerial, administrative, and organizational aspects of information management

Technology Development and Deployment (TDD)

- Focuses you the development, implementation, and maintenance of technical systems in support of information management.

Individualized Program Plan (IPP)

- Combine technical and managerial coursework to create a program of study customized to your interests and needs.

MIM PROGRAM LENGTH

 You can complete the MIM as a Full Time UMD student in:  21 months (3 courses/semester + internship)  18 months (3-4 courses/semester + internship)  You can enroll as a Part Time student and complete the MIM in:  24 months (2 courses/semester + internship “in place”)  Extended enrollment (1-2 courses/semester + internship “in place”)

MIM COMMUNITY

 The UMD MIM program is built on a diverse, multidisciplinary intellectual and professional community that includes:  Faculty & Staff  iSchool Faculty are internationally recognized for their research, teaching, and consulting in areas such as information retrieval, data science, information systems, social computing, digital asset and knowledge management.  Current MIM Students  MIM students have a wide ranging backgrounds, interests, and expertise. They come from all over the world where they have worked in (and are working in) a range of industries, sectors, and types of organization.

ISCHOOL FACULTY

Doug Oard: Leading researcher in cross-language information retrieval and eDiscovery. Former director of the MIM program.

Jimmy Lin:

“ Big data ” researcher, with a particular focus on large-scale distributed algorithms for text processing. Co-Author of “ Data-Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce.

” iSchool Associate Dean for Research.

Vanessa Frias-Martinez: Works with social computing and big data with the goal revealing behavioral fingerprints that might be useful to organizations and policy makers working for social development.

Jessica Vitak: Studies the social impacts of communication technology, specifically on the relationship between network composition, self-presentation strategies, and social capital.

Brian Butler: Research areas include the dynamics of online communities and other technology-supported groups, Wikipedia policies and rules, social networking systems, and the politics of technology implementation in organizations.

Kanti Srikantaiah: Edited several books on knowledge management. Former director of Center for Knowledge Management, Dominican University, Illinois.

Ping Wang: His research seeks to understand the popularity of IT innovations and the effects of popular innovations on organizations. Director of the iSchool Ph.D program.

Vedat Diker: Studies how best to capture organizational and business processes to achieve good data design. Offers courseS in relational and NoSQL database design, web-enabled databases, and business process modeling.
