Purpose

The role of the registered nurse is pivotal to the success of
the relationship-based care model and forms the foundation
of the Professional Advancement Model. UMMC nurses:
• Direct our practice through our governance structure.
• Contribute to the development of the body of nursing
knowledge through research, evidence-based practice, and
performance improvement.
• Practice the art and science of nursing to the full extent of our
licensure; and share our knowledge with patients, families,
interdisciplinary colleagues and peers.

The model provides opportunities for advancement through
nurses’ contributions to patient care, nursing practice, and
the profession of nursing.
