What is the purpose of the BOC
examination?
To objectively discriminate between
someone who can and cannot demonstrate
minimal competence as outlined in the
most current Role Delineation Study.
Why BOC Certification?
• Only accredited, legally defensible,
voluntary credential available for athletic
trainers in the US.
• Provides “gold standard” definition for
competent entry-level practice.
• Recognized as the standard by over 40
states.

Competencies
The JRC-AT requires that the
Competencies be used for curriculum
development and education of students
enrolled in CAAHEP accredited entrylevel athletic training educational
programs.
What is a “Role Delineation Study”?
• Sometimes called a “job analysis”.
• Provides the description of the performance
standards by which entry-level athletic trainers
are evaluated.
• The “Blueprint” for certification examination.
• Establish content areas for continuing
competency activities.

examination assesses
athletic training
knowledge and skill
but they do so in
different ways.

Examination
• Assess clinical decision making and
decision making knowledge and skill
necessary for competent entry-level
practice.
• A Power Point presentation is has been
sent to all CAAHEP program directors.

• All problems linked to the Role Delineation.
• Sections follow a progression over time.
• Each section begins with a description of the
circumstances at that time.
• Each section contains a series of
items/actions/decisions for candidates to choose.

Examination
Evaluates psychomotor skills; as outlined it
the Role Delineation Study, necessary for
competent entry-level practice.

• It is NOT an oral/practical exam.
• You are NOT penalized for speaking
during the exam however,
• Your score is based only on your
demonstration unless you are specifically
asked to report a result.
