Stewardship
Installation
An exhibit celebrating 117
years of volunteerism and
philanthropy for Star Island
The Shining the Star campaign began
with the question of how to honor and
recognize what was accomplished
Property Standards provided guidelines for
exterior naming signage
 Plan for interior naming is consistent with
past practice
 Board and Campaign Cabinet agreed to
naming recognition plan
 Naming opportunities are included in the
solicitation packets

At end of campaign a new set of
questions are raised
– What are the proper ways to recognize
support?
– Why recognize, what is the purpose of
recognition?
– What about our volunteers and their
contributions?
– What or is there an appropriate place on
Star for recognition?
– What about times in the past when
others stepped up to help?
The Process Unfolds

STATEMENT ADOPTED BY FDC & PS:
The Ad Hoc Recognition Task Group proposes the creation of a permanent display of
an exhibition of museum quality that promotes a sense of ownership of Star Island and
celebrates the contributions of all who give of their time, talents, and treasure to ensure
the future of this precious place. The following guidelines are proposed:

To locate a Stewardship Recognition corridor in the Gosport hallway

To establish a timeline and history of turning points and critical moments in
the life of Star Island that will anchor the various plaques and didactic panels
and tell the story of those who made a difference

To include plaques that recognize individuals in the following categories:
– Histories of critical moments in the life of Star Island when Shoalers stepped up
to save this precious place
– Pierson volunteers who have volunteered on Star Island for 5 or more years
– Doolittle volunteers who have served as Board members and committee chairs
with notations for officers and representatives of ISAUU and SIUCC
– Bringer of Light awardees
– Conference captains for the Star Fund campaign in 1988
– Donors to the Shining the Star Capital Campaign
The Purpose Is Clear



To celebrate the history and contributions of so
many Shoalers who have a vision for Star Island
for today and the future
To recognize all by providing a timeline and
reminder of the moments of crisis in the life of
Star Island when Shoalers responded
To inspire all Shoalers to be part of an unbroken
chain of Star Stewards from 1897 to today
