Comments from Evaluations
• Thank you – your evaluations
help me to support you better.
• Sorry that someone felt that I
treated you like little kids.
• I hope today will answer a lot
of your questions.
• Mr. Jedamski – you need better
shoes.
• My summer was great! Thank
you for asking!
Learning Outcomes
• To understand specific
expectations for discipline,
policies and procedures.
• To develop consistency and
efficiency.
• To make everyone’s life easier
and better.
• To build better working
relationships.
Norms
• We’re going to do some
group work so when I raise
my hand, those who can
see me will do the same
and quit talking and when
you see someone with a
raised hand, you’ll do the
same. This should take less
than 5 seconds from start
to finish.
Group Norms
• Reminder of our norms:
Time to Meet some people
• In just a minute, we’re going to
get see which SLC is the fastest.
• You will line up according to a
specific topic in YOUR SLC.
• As soon as the topic is
announced, GO!
New Table Partners
• Please move to a table with your
new table members.
• It’s Team Interview Time.
• Write 5 questions about things you
would like to know about your
team members.
• You’ll have 60 seconds to fire
questions at one member at a
time.
BHS Survey
• You have spoken and we
have acted.
• Not: “Don’t do another
survey and not listen to
anything.”

Practices/Policies
• Let’s go through our website.
BHS NEW Website
http://www.bentonville.k12.ar.us/bhs/
Thank Ben Warrington when you
get a chance!
Email Chad Scott with additional
ideas for improvements.
Handbooks
• http://www.bentonville.k12.ar.
us/bhs/
– BHS Website – Student and
Teacher books
– We do not have 200+ extra
handbooks.
– Make sure that you’ve reviewed.
I’ll also hit some highlights during
the year in my memo.
– You can search by keywords.
Other things to be placed on the
website under “Staff Information”:

Bookkeeping/Money guidelines
Absence guidelines
EVERYTHING
Our goal is not just paperless…
• Our goal is to quit sending you
things that you lose or throw
away.
• Our goal is to attach them to
my weekly memo and then tell
you in the memo where this
document has been saved.
• Then when you need the info,
you can go and find it.
• Hold us accountable.
Consistency…
• When we are not
consistent as adults, we
confuse our students.
• When we confuse our
students, we lose them!
• We are a team and you
are an important member
of this team. We need you
to be consistent.
What does inconsistency do?
• “All staff must support and
enforce them (rules).
When they do not, kids get
the message that they can
break any rule with which
they disagree.”
– What Do I Do When? How to
Achieve Discipline with
Dignity in the Classroom by
Allen Mendler
What else happens?
Anthony Muhammad in Transforming
School Culture explains that when
teachers give privileges that are not
allowed in other classes, “as long as
students are happy and compliant, this
system remains intact…But this system
tends to break down on a regular basis.
Students become increasing
demanding, and those concerned with
achievement become frustrated with
the lack of learning opportunities and
begin to involve their parents.”
More Help
• Jason Jedamski, 9th
grade/Gateway Principal, will
be located in the South office
putting a 9th grade principal
on both floors.
• Admin will be in the hallways
between classes. We have
assigned areas and hope to
see you outside of your rooms
too.
Announcements
• Will not be read in class.
• All announcements will be sent
by email to all BHS staff members
and all individuals who sign up.
– Encourage all students to sign up to
receive them on their personal
account.
– Encourage all parents to sign up.
Announcements
• Will be scrolled in large screen TV
monitors in the cafeterias.
• Will be scrolled on Channel One.
• Once we have Channel One
working, use them:
– When students are coming and
going in your room
– During individualized work
– Other times that you want to use
them with.
Additional ways to communicate
• Phone call system
– You can target as many students as you
want and be as specific as you want. See
Jane Kilby (North) or Kay Roark (South)
• Website

Clubs
Someone who just won an event
The Coach’s prediction for this
week’s game
– Etc.
– We’ll post on “News” for our
website and send to you for your
website.
And it just keeps coming…
• I’ll send out invitations to my
calendar. You can then see
what your principal does all day.
• ISS for a student will no longer be
an email, it will be sent as an
invitation.
– But that means that you have to
open your calendar each morning!
• Choose “accept” to Outlook
invitations but don’t send a reply.
(Keep that email uncluttered.)
And speaking of websites…
• YOUR WEBSITE is a great, easy way
to communicate!
• All staff members have access at
http://portal.bentonville.k12.ar.us/
BHSTeacherTemplace to create
their own if they haven’t done so.
• Sept 1st – All will go live to our

Additional ways NOT to communicate
• Mass emails to everyone
– If you do this, EVERY STAFF
MEMBER is going to send an
email reply – YOU’VE BEEN
NORMED.
• Asking Kim simple questions of
where to find something.
– Have a buddy teacher or email
your department chair
– Go to our BHS Website.
Unclutter the email….
• Don’t send out lists of students
leaving for events to BHS Staff.
• All teachers/coaches who take
students out of school must submit
those names by NOON of the day
BEFORE the trip to the “BHS Secretarial Staff”. The SLC secretaries will
enter SB for a student absent BEFORE
the trip so teachers know.
• If a student comes to school, send
the SLC secretary an email that they
are here and it will be changed.
More uncluttering…
• Don’t email to principal and
bookkeeper purchase orders.
• Just send to Laurie Watts for the
North Bldg and Lisa Nelson for
the South Bldg –AFTER getting
Department Chair’s signature.
• Bookkeepers will print POs and
get my signature.
• Only email if you want to know
if you can buy something.
Ways to cut costs…
• Use the Print Center first .0058. (15 or more copies)
• Use the Xerox Copier 2nd .0069
• Use the printer LAST – 3
cents each - .03
• We need your help since
our budget was cut by
$175,000.
South Building Lounge
• We’ve taken the exercise
equipment out of the old south
building lounge and as soon as
today is over, you’ll have tables
again so you have a place to
eat and socialize.
Print Shop
• The south building print shop
jobs will be taken to the south
building mailroom each
morning for your convenience.
• The north building print shop
jobs will be taken by cart
instead of the scenic delivery
truck to the north mailroom
each morning for your
convenience.
Jeans Passes
• Scholarship Program – Purchase
passes for $2.00 to wear
Professional Jeans with collared
shirts EVERY Thursday. (See Laurie
Watts – bookkeeper in North
building.
• United Way – we may have a
special donation pass for some
additional jeans days.
• Foundation Jeans day – Feb. 1st –
5th.
Faculty Dress Code
• Professional Dress MondayThursday except for
Friday’s – Jeans and
college/school t-shirts are
allowed.
• Professional Dress does not
include flip flops, shorts,
jeans, or t-shirts.
• Jeans should not have
holes or be ragged.
Fist to Five
• At your table – Rank your position
with “I can be consistent with
everything so far.”
• 5 – I agree and can lead.
• 4 – I agree and can support.
• 3 – I am not sure, but will trust the
group opinion.
• 2 – I need more discussion.
• 1 – I need the alternative modified
before I can support it.
• Fist – I cannot support this.
Seminar
• Our goals are: relationship
builders and prevention
specialists
– Build relationships with your
seminar students
– Look for ways to help kids
succeed in school
• Extra paper, pencils, organize
for the day, focus for the day,
etc.
Two types of Seminar now:
• Tuesday/Thursday Seminar
– Get help with homework from
teachers. (Travel)
– Study or Read

Friday Seminar/Advisory
Seminar Goals
• Tuesday/Thursday Seminar
– Academic Success
– Building relationships
– Preventing problems
• Friday Seminar/Advisory
– Future plans crosschecked
against current progress
(Relevance)
– Building relationships
– Preventing problems
Seminar
• 1:50 Bell rings. Reading
time begins.
• Everyone reads until
2:05pm. We must model
what we want. Stop and
pick up a magazine,
newspaper, or book and
just relax and read. No
homework is allowed yet.
• 2:05 Bell rings to signal
travel is permitted.
Seminar
• Homework or Reading. Not visiting
or playing games.
• Seminar is counted as academic
time by the state. We could lose it
if we don’t use it correctly.
• 2:40 Athletes in season are
released.
• 3:20 Channel One comes on. Turn
on your TV! In-Season Athletes can
leave.
• 3:35 Class is over.
Seminar
• No one travels without a
seminar pass.
• You can email a teacher
and if that teacher
confirms, then create a
pass for that student.
• No pass; no traveling; no
exceptions.
Tuesday/Thursday Seminar
To help students travel
sooner in the school year,
you will not attend the SLC
Principal meetings. The
FLC will meet the first week
with their students and
then travel can begin on
August 25th.
Students must pass the
handbook test to travel.
Seminar Advisory
• Email the SLC secretary if you see
attendance issues.
• All grades and attendance should be
checked each Friday unless you have a
special SLC activity.
• Email the SLC principal or counselor with
grade issues.
• Be that person who cares about the
student whose parent can’t or won’t
take the time to check on these issues.
You may be the only one who helps an
at-risk student stay in school or go on to
college.
Tuesday/Thursday Seminar
• Guided Study Seminars
– Counselors will change the
schedule of students placed
in that class.
– When they are passing a
class or if GS has been
unsuccessful, then they will
return to your class.
– There will be a waiting list so
please realize that an F is not
automatic placement.
Guided Study
• Guided study will not work
unless all regular teachers
coordinate with the GS
teacher regarding work.
• The GS teacher will let you
know when one of your
students is placed with
him/her and then you
MUST communicate about
classwork.
Seminar
• The guided study teacher
will find out specific ways
to help that student and
then will let classroom
teachers know:
– More background
knowledge is needed.
– Show relevance for student.
– Reinforce new organizational
skill.
– More one-on-one support.
Seminar
• Pros-N-Cons
• Think - Pair – Share:
– A – present all the Pros for
Seminars
– B - present all the Cons for
Seminars
– Jot down ideas on paper.
– Share.
– Switch partners and repeat.
Seminar
• Jot down any unanswered
points on a sticky note.
• AP’s will pick those up from
tables to put on Discussion
List Paper.
Academic time is precious!
• As much as humanly
possible, all class meetings,
assemblies, forms, etc will
take place during seminar.
• Please let us know when
we are not following this
rule.
• Unfortunately, discipline
cannot always be done
the period that it occurred
in, but that is a priority.
Less Interruptions
• We will limit the class notes
going to your classes.
• If parents call or bring
something by, we will send at
the end of the class or the end
of the day.
• Counselors will still need to see
students during class but they
are sensitive to academics.
Tardies
• Students will not check into the
office if they are tardy.
• They will report directly to class.
• You will mark them tardy in the
grade book.*
• Tell the student that he/she was
tardy. **
• SLC secretaries will run tardy
reports frequently to catch
problems and send them to AP to
discipline.
Teacher Caused Tardies
• Keeping student(s) after the bell
for bad behavior is not an
acceptable behavioral strategy.
Use something else.
• Not paying attention to the time
is not an acceptable classroom
management strategy. Buy a
buzzer, use a stop watch, ask a
student, but learn to manage the
90 minutes.
Talking chips (pens)
• Place your pen in the center
before talking.
• Participants cannot talk once
pen is used until all pens are in the
center.
• Keep going for 3 minutes.
• Topic: How can you effectively
begin class and enter tardies?
Cell Phones
• Cell phones – please do not
give back or overlook ONE cell
phone. Send all cell phones to
Officer Vera so that we are
consistent with all students.
There are no exceptions or
excuses for a cell phone being
out or going off.
• Visible Cell phones are banned
from 8:35-3:35.
• We only give back to
parents/guardians or students
who live on their own.
Dress Code
• Dress Code – send all dress code
violations to the office. We will
document all infractions before
they call home so that discipline will
take place for the frequent flyers.
• Dress Code – please check at the
beginning of the day for holes
above finger tip length, length of
skirt/shorts, and shoulder straps.
Low cleavage – email the assistant
principal any time.
Dress Code
• It’s not just a female teacher
responsibility. Most of it can be
easily addressed. Send
cleavage comments to the
AP.
• If everyone is consistent, this
will not be the big deal that it’s
become.
• Hit it hard the first month, and
it’s downhill from there.
IPODS
• From the surveys, this was a hot
topic.
• At our summer Leadership
Meeting, we voted to ban IPODS
for safety and academic reasons.
– Too many are using during
instruction and teachers do not
know.
– They are used in the hallways and
students do not hear what is going
on or do not respond to teachers.
IPOD rule
• Visible IPODs are banned from
8:35-3:35 in both buildings.
• Take them away and send to
Steve Vera. Don’t lay them
down for someone to steal.
• Steve Vera will send names to
Assistant Principals as they are
picked up. AP’s will follow up
with discipline.
• Parent/Guardian will have to
pick up.
IPOD AND ACADEMICS
• Students do not need their
IPODS to behave.
• If they are finished with work
early, they need to read,
study, do a puzzle, etc.
• \\briana\kgarrett$\My
Documents\Discipline\IPOD
Alternatives.docx
• There are no exceptions to this
rule.
Hats, hats, and more hats!
• No longer will students be
able to walk around and
take off and put on their
hat as people instruct
them to do or not to do.
• NO VISIBLE HATS – IN THE
HAND OR ON THE HEAD IN
ANY BUILDING AT ANY
TIME.
Hat Rule
• Take it away
• Send it to the AP
• Students can pick up a hat
on a Friday only.
• Repeat offenders will be
disciplined for
insubordination.
• HATS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN
ANY CLASSES!
Inconsistency
• We need your help please enforce the rules.
• If you do not like a rule, use
the system to get rid of it.
• With 3300 students, no one
person, no one group, no
one team can discipline
effectively in isolation. It
takes all of us working
together!
Discipline: Change is the Goal
• Please handle small infractions.
– Not having supplies
– Jumped over chair
• Please save the office for
repeat offenders and truly
major situations that cause you
to stop teaching.
Everyone will hand out Aug.
17th-21st!
You’ve been Warned!
__Cell phone or IPOD
Not allowed 8:35-3:35 any where
__ Dress Code (See handbook)
__ Hat – No wearing or carrying
Not allowed inside any building
Discipline begins August 24th
Don’t lose privileges!
Paraphrase Passport
• How can we help all staff
members be consistent
with discipline?
• A responds while B listens
• B must correctly restate A’s
ideas. A can help fix.
• B responds while A listens.
• A must correctly restate
B’s ideas. B can help fix.
Homework
• Research says that it is
harder to relearn a skill
than learn it the first time.
• Therefore, don’t send
students home with
something to “learn” or
“figure out.”
• Homework should be
practice of what they
have learned to do to
increase automation.
Homework
• If you don’t get to that section,
then don’t stay with your
original homework plans.
• Homework should be
meaningful, not busy work.
• Remember the students who
will not have any help from
parents and may not even
have a quiet place to study at
home. What can you do to
help them?
Grades / Grade book
• We need everyone to use the
“Z” for zero papers so that
parents, students, counselors,
and principals know that a “Z”
means – The student didn’t do
the work.
• Use “0” for students who scored
a zero.
• Minimum of 2 grades per week
(District Policy)
• Grades updated within 2
weeks. (District Policy)
Parent Contacts
• As a professional, you should be in
contact with the parents of your
students.
– Never underestimate the power of
good news.
– Changes in grades.
– Large projects/ assignments/tests
• Having grades posted on in the
internet does not release you of
your responsibility.
• Keep a record of them. (not
printing all of them. )
How to put something on the
master calendar…
• Send it to Chad Scott for
approval and to put it there.
• Garry Bruch for Arend Arts
Center.
Where do I find that?
• We need to always ask the
fewest number of people
possible when we have a
question.
– Use this form.
– Email Kim for
suggestions/improvements.
– Cut down on email clutter!
Teacher Contract Times
• 8:00-3:45 – Your contracted day.
If you have your planning period
at the beginning or end, you
cannot arrive late or leave early.
• If you need to leave early for
arrive late for a special situation,
clear that thru your SLC principal.
• All absences are still thru K.
Garrett but will be changing to
SLC principal soon.
Duty Schedule
• Mr. Runnels will have ready on Friday for
my memo.
• He will also have a description of each
duty.
• If you have questions, you can meet
with him either Monday at 10:00 in the
Lecture Hall or Wednesday at 10:00 in
the Lecture Hall or by appt.
• The bad news – we’ve gone to the
district approach – you’ve got duty all
year.
• The good news – It’s the same duty.
Hallways
• We need all teachers to be
in the hallways between
classes.
• Administrators will also
have an area that they
patrol during each passing
period.
Tutoring Sign
• Please post for your
students!
• Always mention our
homework
assistance/tutoring times
for parents in your letters
and emails at the
beginning of the year.
Staff Development Workday
• Any time that you are not
in a meeting where you
sign in, you must document
your time on this workday
page.
• Make copies as needed.
• Turn into Vicky Cowart
Professional Development Planner
• Begin your 09-10 staff
development folder.
• Document as you go.
• Put in proof as you go.
• Print a copy at the end of
the year.
• Turn in at the end of the
year without scrambling!
• This is required for the state.
Professional Development
• When you plan to attend
professional development,
you need to:
– 1. Put in your absence in AESOP
for approval and include how
your sub will be paid.
– 2. Fill out the purchase order
request if it costs money.
– 3. Fill out the staff development
PRE-approval form on-line.

Extra Food at BHS
• State Law is that we are only
allowed outside food 9 days at
BHS.
• This is not 9 days per class. This is a
total of 9 days in the entire year.
• We will work in the Leadership
group to set these 9 days and we
will need for you to work within this
requirement.
• Exceptions are allowed for food in
the curriculum.
Bell Schedule
• Please post for students
too!
• Found on website under
Staff Info.
Safety at BHS
• 1. Duties – You are
responsible for getting
another teacher to sub for
you if you are gone on a
duty day.
• 2. Crisis Plan- this is located in
______. Please read through
so that you are familiar with
the expectations.
Safety
• Mr. Runnels will be getting
this information out to
everyone.
• I’ll have more info in a
memo.
First Weeks
• Counseling info – read in
Friday’s memo. Important!
• Thursday – B; Friday – A
• Do Warm Body Counts at 10:10
for the Thursday-Tuesday. Form
will be given to you in your
mailbox before each day. If
you don’t tape to your door,
we will have to interrupt your
classroom.
F’s last year by SLC
At-Risk strategies
• Relevance
– What is relevant should be
considered every time that a
lesson is planned.
• Relationships
– They don’t care what we
know until they know we
care.
PLCs
• James Swim will be the
administrator supporting PLC
Teams.
• He will attend some meetings
of all groups and coordinate
with admin.
• He’ll be compiling information
about our teams so that the
admin know best how to
support.
PLCs
• Mr. Swim has sent a spreadsheet
to everyone of the PLC teams.
• Please email revisions to him.
• ..\..\PLC\PLC
EXPECTATIONS.docx
• Email Mr. Swim the locations for
your meetings this week.
• Email Mr. Swim the following:
– Team Leader
– Regular meeting Rm, day, time
PLCs
• A journey…never a program or
destination
– Therefore, we have many avenues
that we can travel – no one set
road.
• The important part is that we’re
part of the trip!
PLCs
• It’s about:
– keeping your creativity in
teaching,
– analyzing your students and
teaching to those weaknesses
and strengths,
– and assuring parents, students,
and future teachers that ALL
students in the same curriculum
class were exposed to the same
essential skills.
Placemat Consensus
• Decide what area is yours.
• Write in your area as many items
on the topic as you can (I’ll give
you the topic)
• Go around the group
announcing an item. Discuss as a
team, record if everyone agrees
that’s a great idea in the middle.
• Repeat until all items are
discussed.
• Carousel walk
