CONFINED SPACE ENTRY POLICY ABOARD
MERCHANT VESSELS
FOR MARINE SAFETY AND
ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PERSONNEL
Pump Room Hazard Incident
Current guidance for confined space entry is in the form of
recommended Safe Work Practices (SWP’s) contained in the
Marine Safety Manual (MSM), Volume I, Chapter 10.
Although much of the guidance in the MSM has been
modified over the years and has been incorporated into
SWP’s in the current version, the general policy of requiring
an NFPA Certificated Marine Chemist to test and certify
confined spaces prior to entry by Coast Guard personnel has
not changed.
