Solaris 10x86 on a Dell

Obtain an ISO of Solaris 10x86 from Oracle’s web site. Will require you register.

Login to Oracle’s web site, and select ‘I want to…..’
Select Download patches.
Under Patch Search, select Product or Family
Enter Solaris Operating System under Product
Select Solaris 10 Operating System under Release and
select close
Select your System architecture (32 or 64 bit)
Select the plus (+) to the far right
Select Description and enter Recommended
Select Search
Download the Recommended OS Patchset

Insert DVD into system
Power on system
Select Solaris 10 from the menu selection
Enter a system name
If system is on a network, select yes for
networked system
• Enter IP Address and Netmask
• Accept
• Enter Type of Name Service (DNS, LDAP, etc)

Enter Timezone
Correct time if necessary and accept
Enter password
Enter packages to install

Full installation plus OEM is everything
Full installation is everything, except OEM packages
Developer is for developers
Desktop is for a desktop user
Minimum is the bare minimum packages required
• Accept

• Select File system type
– I chose ZFS as it is journaled
– If you are not familiar with ZFS, become familiar
with it prior to using it for your root partition
• Select disk to use
• To be safe, edit the disk and ensure the
partition is configured for SOLARIS
• Accept
• Installation start
Patching
• Copy the patch cluster you downloaded to a location on the disk. I
usually use /var/tmp/patch
• Change directory to /var/tmp/patch
• Unzip the cluster (unzip –q 10*zip)
• Change directory to 1*ed
• Run the command to install the patches. The format of the
command is ./i*r --<password> <options>
• ./inst*r –s10patchset –apply-prereq (to install the required
patches). This is a total of 11 patches
• Reboot
• Login and change directory to /var/tmp/patch/1*ed
• ./i*r –s10patchset
• Reboot
• You have successfully installed and patched Solaris 10x86
