Erasmus Impact Study 2014 • “Effects of mobility on the skills and employability of students and the internationalisation of higher education institutions” • A large survey by European Comission • feedback from nearly 80 000 respondents including students and businesses. • confirms – EU student exchange scheme boosts employability and job mobility – Young people who study or train abroad not only gain knowledge in specific disciplines, but also strengthen key transversal skills which are highly valued by employers. Japanin ja Kiinan kohteissa) – Enintään 5 op mahdollista korvata Aalto-yliopiston kursseilla mikäli 20-25 op vaatimus ei täyty vaihtoajan opinnoilla – Suositeltuja sisältöjä: kielikurssit (edistynyt taso), kulttuurienvälisen viestinnän kurssit, kansainvälisesti suuntautuneet oman alan kurssit – Ei voi sisältää kandi- tai DI-työtä eikä lähtökohtaisesti kv-harjoittelua In what language? • Recommended: local language • In English ok, IF enough courses available and host university allows • Erasmus-exchange: language certificate by Aalto University Language Center • Long distance and some European destinations: possible TOEFL/ IELTS, have to be done well in time! • Always check the language test requirements of the host university! Important: language level requirements! • If a certain CERF level is required by the exchange destination, the language certificate must show that this level has been reached. • It is only possible to show your level, if you have completed a certain level course in Aalto University. • All language center English language courses are at at least B2 -level. • TOEFL/IELTS normally suitable instead of CERF-test Money matters • • • • Aalto University grants an exchange scholarship for every student getting Aalto’s exchange place. exchanges place = automatic Aalto scholarship for exchange studies The objective for exchange studies and prerequisite for getting the scholarship is to gain 30cr/semester The Aalto scholarship for outgoing exchange students: • • • • One semester or thesis work abroad: EUR 1500 Full academic year: EUR 2500 Erasmus students: according to destination and length of the stay In addition: • • • CIMO Accessibility Grant in Erasmus-, First- ja Nordtek-programmes (when an injury, impairment, illness, learning difficulty or other special need causes such additional costs as are not covered by other sources.) Family Grant for students with children (ErasmusPlus) Normal Finnish study grant and housing support, higher monthly study loan Where to go? You will most likely get the place what you want in first place. • No tuition fees • Same academic calender with Finland, exchange period easy to organise • Accommodation usually arranged by the host university • Excellent and good quality tuition in English in most of the Nordic universities. • Yes, there are enough differences in Sweden/Norway/Denmark/Island compared to Finland to make your exchange interesting! To Europe with ErasmusPlus -programme • No tuition fees (but not student union fees, insurance and miscellaneous charges for materials). • Easy to plan with European study credit system: 1 ECTS = 1 Aalto credit) • Places available almost in every European country • Please check the language requirements per destination! Some destinations require language skills of the country, meaning English skills are not enough. Note to check the academic calender of the destination! Always check the application info per destination! • • • • Any good hints from professors and teaching staff? Read exchange raports, also from other destinations than just the main interest Get to known the international students here at Aalto University (international tutor, AYY and guild activities…) In general, applying is rather independent process and requires tolerance for uncertanity… How to apply? 1. Choose your destination/-s 2. Choose the courses per destination, make a study plan per destination 3. Get the study plans accepted by the study planning officer and professor 4. Get the other application documents: - language certificate/-s - transcript of records - ect. 5.
