Mission: In eight and a half months, to improve the Whalen Co. Vertical Heat Pump
by eliminating standing water, decrease the noise level, and draw air from
both rooms being conditioned.
Approach: Through the use of competitive benchmarking, FPED’s knowledge, and
Whalen’s field expertise, to create an improved vertical heat pump design
that comfortably satisfies the general needs of everyone.
Whalen Company
• Whalen Co
Dept. T, P.O. Box 1390
Easton, MD 21601 USA
• Maker of heating & air conditioning
equipment
Project Background
• By 2000, ARI will require that no standing
water be allowed in HVAC systems.
• This prompts Whalen Co. to redesign the
current condensate drip pan in their vertical
water source heat pump
• While solving this problem, they decided to
address some others, as well...
Problem as presented to FPED
• Eliminate the standing water in the
condensate drain pan of the unit.
• Improve the circulation in the “two room”
units.
• Lower the operating noise level.
Benefits
• The new drain pan will be in accordance
with ARI standards, as well as reducing the
chances of health risks due to stagnant
water.
• The “two room” return air draw will allow
Whalen Co. to be more competitive in the
industry.
• A quieter unit will bolster sales.

Preliminary Constraints
• size
– Whalen’s current package design
• regulating agency standards
– American Refrigeration Institute
– Underwriters Laboratories Inc
Budgeting
• Mr. Christopher Whalen has agreed to
“provide a unit and any and all materials
needed within reason.”
• We are awaiting more information as to
what “within reason” means more
specifically.
Main Competitor #1
The Trane Company
• Flush-mounted, hinged panel for quality
sound attenuation
• Convenient serviceability
• Adjustable risers to accommodate varying
height constraints.
Main Competitor #2
ClimateMaster 816 Series
• 45 return air/discharge air options
• Three return air panel options for optimum
sound dissipation
• Removable refrigerant chassis for easy
access to the drain pan along with the other
components
• Optional acoustical return air Panels
Other Benchmarks…
• York Embassy Series single package
vertical water source air conditioner
• McQuay and AAF vertical mounted water
source heat pump
• General Heating and Air Conditioning
