 Relationship between letters and sounds
 Like a code – if you know combinations you will learn to
decode words
 For example: “tion” sounds like /shun/, digraphs, blends,
 Spelling patterns (word family chunks)
 Phonemic Awareness is NOT PHONICS
 Sounds in words (B/U/G)
 Understanding that words are made up of sounds
 Sounds can be grouped together, moved and changed
 Ability to hear, identify, and manipulate individual sounds in
words.
