Learning Diaries
• Pictures from home can go into the
children’s learning diaries as well as
wow slips.
• Children can stick into learning
diaries a piece of work that they
are proud of too – e.g. a colouring
sheet.
“One of the most important things a
parent can do to boost the educational
chances of their child is to read to
them.”
Alan Johnson
Reading at home
It is really important to share books at home be it library
books or school reading books. Children are sent home with a
book without words in their first week at school because being
a reader is not just about being able to decode words but
about being able to tell a story, make a prediction, use
inference and talk about the characters in a story amongst
other comprehension skills. It may be that you read the same
book more than once to get the most out of the story.
Start by looking at the title of the book and the sounds in the
inside front cover.

Home Link Books
Whenever you read with your child please write it in their
home-link book and if they read 3 times a week they will get a
reward. If you wish to change your child’s book more than once
a week write it in their book and we will do this for you.
Most importantly...
• Love books!
• Make time to talk about the book
• Make story time a special time

ABC
It is important that children know that each letter sound has a
letter name and we sing an alphabet rap so that they learn
their alphabet, but they must sound out words using the letter
Sound when they are reading.
How to help at home
 We have started sending home learning folders home with
your children showing the sounds that we have been learning.
You can use their sheets as you want - colouring, letter
practise. Some children enjoy looking through magazines and
catalogues for things starting with these sounds and sticking
them in.
 Encourage a correct pencil grip when you see your child
holding felt pens, paint brushes etc. Try a clothes peg if they
find this hard. “Quacky fingers”!
 When writing letter shapes encourage anticlockwise and
vertical strokes.
 Let your child see you enjoying reading and writing.
 Name writing practise – in sand, with felt tips, crayons,
anything!!
 Letters and Sound website – type into google, Phase 2.
