a) Let’s parents know what/how children are learning.

b) Extends learning time so children learn more and make more progress.

c) Involves parents in children’s learning.

d) Improves self-discipline.

e) Increases independence and organisational skills.

What are negative effects?

• Tiredness.

• Hampers relationships with parents.

• Can be demotivating if complex tasks set without teacher input.

• No correlation between the amount of homework and progress.

• Sanctions and surveillance by parents has a negative effect on progress.

What does research tell us is the most effective approach to home learning?

• Short frequent tasks that are closely monitored by teachers.

• Open learning tasks are effective for older learners.

• Most effective homework tasks involve rote learning, practice or rehearsal.

Effective approaches…

• Parents encouraging children to be independent rather than ‘you must do homework’ and standing over children.

• High expectations and encouragement by parents.

So what are sort of tasks being set?
