ONE-STEP EQUATIONS

PREDICT
NOW, What about multiplying
and dividing?
What do you predict?
Turn and tell your neighbor .
HMMMMMMM??
Since addition and subtraction
are opposites, I’ll bet they are the
same for multiplication and
division…………
So how would I solve 4x = 28
4X = 28
• What operation is happening in this problem?
• Multiplication ( x is being multiplied by 4)
• Do the opposite, so you will divide both sides
by…………… you guessed it, 4
• 4x ÷ 4 = 1x or just x. (we never write a 1 with a
variable.
• 28 ÷ 4 = 7
• So x = 7
Check. 4x = 28  4(7) = 28  28 =28
= 9
1. Division is the operation, so I will
multiply both sides by 8 (because 8 is
what is being divided by)
2. Multiplying
by 8 will give me 1k or
just k.
9(8) = 72, so k = 72
Check
=9 9=9
MULTIPLYING AND DIVIDING
ONE-STEP EQUATIONS
The first thing you need to do Finn is to
decide what operation is being used in the
equation. Next, use either the addition,
subtraction, multiplication or division
properties of equality to solve the problem.
To do this you do the opposite of whatever
property is being used in the equation to
both sides. It’s very important to do it to
both sides Finn!
