Estimating Customary Length

• You can estimate customary length to the nearest inch and half inch. Estimate means to make a good guess.

• You can use a ruler to measure and check your estimations.

1 st Activity • Practice Measuring with a Ruler •When you are done, click on the back button to return to this page.

3 rd Activity •Go here and select

Easy Inches

.

•Record your score in your math notebook.

2 nd Activity •Go here and follow the directions. Be sure to print out a recording sheet before you begin.

•When you are done, click on the back button to return to this page.

Measurement Example

Inch (in.) A paper clip is about 1 inch long. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Foot (ft) =12 inches Your textbook is about 1 foot long.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yard (yd) =3 feet A baseball bat is about 1 yard long.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mile (mi) =5,280 feet You can walk 1 mile in about 20 minutes.

Customary Capacity

Capacity is the amount a container can hold. Cup (c), pint (pt), quart (qt), and gallon (gal) are customary units for measuring capacity.

1 st How are cups, pints, quarts, and gallons related?

Customary Weight

An ounce (oz) and a pound (lb) are customary units for measuring weight.

A strawberry weighs about 1 ounce.

Easy Centimeters

.

•Record your score in your math notebook.

2 nd Activity You can measure length in centimeters and meters if you are using the metric system. Complete this e-lab to practice measuring with a metric ruler. Don’t forget to print a recording sheet before you get started.

Measurement

Centimeter (cm)

Example

A centimeter is about the width of your pointer finger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Decimeter (dm) =10 cm A decimeter is about the width of an adult’s hand.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meter (m) =100 cm or 10 dm Your arm span is about 1 meter long.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Kilometer (km) =1,000 m A kilometer is a little more than a half a mile.

Metric Capacity

Capacity is the amount a container can hold. Capacity can be measured by using metric units such as the milliliter (mL) and liter (L).

How are Milliliters and Liters related?

2 nd Comparing Capacity Activity

Metric Mass

The gram (g) and the kilogram (kg) are metric units for measuring mass.

A paper clip has a mass of about 1 gram.

Your math textbook has a mass of about 1 kilogram.
