2012
CSF Research Associates are offered the
opportunity to interact with the rest of the CSF
extended family. Research Associates have the
opportunity to interact with the existing diverse
human resource network and to contribute to it
as they wish. CSF may serve as their primary
base of operations or as an additional platform
from which to pursue interests outside their
regular employment. Should they wish to apply
for grants to fund their interests, they will have
the benefit of wisdom and counsel from other
successful grant recipients and they will also
benefit from the low established overhead rate at
CSF.

Mr. Drake has been an educator for 30 years. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science
degree from Eastern Michigan University and his Masters Degree in Instructional
Technology from George Mason University. Mr. Drake started his career teaching
science and coaching a variety of varsity sports in Hollywood Beach FL. He moved to
Virginia in 1982 and continued teaching while implementing technology innovations
and merging them with science instruction. In 1990 he was named Science Chairman
at
Hylton High School. At this time his astronomy classes were highlighted in the
Washington Post and recognized for their project that created computer generated
star maps for Desert Storm troops stationed in Saudi Arabia. In 1991 his advanced
earth science classes calculated that Prince William Co. could save $1,000,000 if the
county started a recycling program based on calculations of keeping recyclable
materials out of the county landfill. In 1992 Mr. Drake was named the National IBM
and Technology and Learning Teacher of the Year and awarded $80,000.00 in
equipment for constructing a state-of-the-art Weather Satellite receiving station on
the school’s roof. In 1998, Mr. Drake led a team
of three science students at the invitation of Vice President Al Gore to present their El
Nino data at the International GLOBE Summit in Helsinki, Finland. In 1999 Mr. Drake
was named Information Technology
Specialty Program Coordinator for a new state-of-the-art high school in Prince
William County Public Schools.

During the first three years at Forest Park High School, he wrote and received over
$250,000.00 in technology grants and equipment donations. In 2005, Mr. Drake’s
iT students were asked by the U.S. Department of Education to help create an
educational video to be presented to Congress highlighting the importance of the
new National Education Technology plan. Their video was used to unveil the new
plan to Congress. In 2006, Mr. Drake was named a Japan Fulbright Scholar and
spent three weeks studying in Japan. In 2008, Mr. Drake co-authored the winning
proposal to lead the Virginia Student Training and Refurbishment Program (VA
STAR) solicited by the Governor’s Office of Technology and the Department of
Education. Virginia CTO Aneesh Chopra named Mr. Drake’s iT Specialty Program to
become the state model for the VA STAR program. In 2010 Mr. Drake was named
the VA STAR State Coordinator for the project and the program was awarded a
$345,000.00 Productivity Investment Fund two year grant to implement the
program. In 2012, Mr. Drake secured $425,000.00 from the Virginia General
Assembly for VA STAR to expand the program throughout the Commonwealth.
Since its opening in 2001. Forest Park network systems students have refurbished
and donated over 8,000 computers to schools, families and community
organizations in Virginia, Washington D.C., New York and overseas. Mr. Drake
currently is the iT Specialty Program and Advanced Placement Coordinator at
Forest Park High School in Prince William County Public Schools and is the state

Project Director, Interactive Communications & Simulations
I am the Managing Director of the Interactive Communications & Simulations (ICS)
group. Founded by Professor Fred Goodman, our group designs and facilitates
computer-mediated curricular projects that link students from upper elementary
through college age with peers and with university mentors. We conduct
computer-mediated simulations (including Place out of Time, a historical
simulation developed in conjunction with the Center for Middle Eastern and North
African Studies) and other writing-based explorations (such as our Earth Odyssey,
a socio-cultural discussion forum based on vicarious travel). Each of these
projects engages a team of university students who enroll in one of our School of
Education seminars (Education 362 and 462) through which they are engaged in
service as mentors to the younger students. I have also been involved with the
Master of Arts with Secondary Certification (MAC) Program for several years, and I
currently teach the "Teaching with Technology" course for MAC students.
