Challenges in working with BOM and CAD
Reduce time spend on Non-Value-Added Activities
Non-Value-Added Activities:
– These activities:
• Take the engineer or designer out of their design flow
– Examples are:
• Too many disparate tasks in aligning the product configuration
– Manually keeping virtual designs and BOMs synchronized takes extra
work
– Extra work is needed by Supply Chain and Manufacturing to ensure
they have the correct data
• The enterprise cannot access information related to the BOM
such as the correct CAD easily
• Remembering different workflow paths depending upon working
with parts or CAD
Value-Added Activities:
– Value-added activities:
• Enable the team to focus on meeting the requirements of the
customer.
• Let the designer and engineer focus on the product and the
customer, not the tool

Key Concept - What is a Product Structure or BOM?
• Contains the historical, current and planned information that supports the
design, planning, production, and support of your products.
– How they are designed
– How they are built
– History of decisions
• Provides the basis for the product
architecture & downstream needs
– Basis for modularity and configurability
– Leverage for manufacturing and service
• Structured set of related information

Best for loading/updating of large sets of parts and
structures
Can be utilized when the product objects and
structures are defined externally to Windchill
Use with creating new and evolving with CAD as
starting point
Supports existing CAD driven design practices
where structures match closely with the CAD
environment
Can be utilized “top-down” where associations
occur to pre-existing Parts
Use with new or existing – particularly when getting
data from partners
Best when designs have common objects and structures
Use to evolve existing designs and to copy overloaded
products to create new similar family

9
Model driven Product Structure
Bottom Up
• Goal – Deliver more flexibility to user working with product structure
driven from CAD data
– Enable user outside of CAD tools to work with CAD driven
product structure
• Propagate attributes from CAD to BOM
• Support differences in structures
–
–
–
–
Gathering parts
Bulk items
Quantity differences
Parameter driven part creation capabilities
• Support hybrid – drive bottom up and top down
– Create and insert CAD from part structure

Editing model Driven Product Structure
Gathering Parts
• Purpose
– Handing assemblies that are for modeling only
– Elevating its children in the BOM

Top Down Design driven
Challenge: Avoid gridlock while developing complex, multi-disciplined products
Create or reuse existing part and
associated CAD structures
• Goal – Proactively plan and architect products to support
top-down, concurrent, team-based development.
• Capabilities:
– Simultaneously create or reuse existing part and
associated CAD structures
– Create and validate conceptual design structures
in PLM
– Create or reuse skeletons to drive design intent
(i.e. interfaces, keep out areas, etc.) in CAD
– Concurrently design subassemblies in CAD and
synchronize updates with associated product
structures

BOM Creation Improvements in Windchill 10.2 M020
CAD driven product structure improvements
• New “All Models” option to Auto Relate Derived Drawings to Parts
– Operation > Auto Associate > Auto Relate Drawings To Parts
– For All association types between models and (WT)Parts, models drawing will be auto related to
the (WT)Part
• Build Parts at the time of Associating to a CAD Document
– New preference when enabled to allow automatic building on associate action
• Operation > Auto Associate > Build Part After Associate = (Yes/No)
– Part iterated and structure updated
– Viewable representation available on Part
– CAD document check-in (iteration) not required

Revise Only CAD Document in Windchill 10.2 M020
• In previous releases revising the CAD document would break it’s
relationship to the Part its related to.
• In 10.2 M020 a new preference has been added:
– Carry Forward Content Association for CAD Document Revise
Revise CAD Document ONLY
• Enables the new Revision to be related to the existing part
• Let’s look at a simple example

Windchill Workgroup Manager 10.2 M030
Improve Build Process to Create a Single Uses Link for Flexible Components
 Currently, 2 CAD Doc associated with the same Part AND both CAD Docs are
assembled into the same CAD model, result in build process creates 2 usage links to
the same Part.

10.2 M030+
 This causes problems with the BOM – Quantity calculations,
propagating BOM info to ERP systems, allocation of Line
Number.

 From 10.2 M030 this scenario will create a single usage link to
the Part.
 This is a general enhancement to the Part build process (not
CAD specific).

ECAD BOM Generation in Windchill 10.2 M020
• .csv file import
• PTC Windchill Workgroup Manager
for ECAD
– BOM is optional during ECAD Check-In
• Derived from Board or Schematic
• BOM parts are auto associated to CAD doc
– Variant BOM or custom BOM?
• Hooks
• BOM Attribute Map
– Linked to ECAD document in Windchill
– Enables custom map of BOM columns from
ECAD to Windchill attributes

34
BOM generation enhancements
• Simplify the creation BOM attribute mappings for ECAD easier for the end
users.
– A user currently is not able to easily create a CSV file to load into the UI without
knowing the pvecad2pvsd command line arguments, neither is a user able to
manually enter values in the UI.
• Provide an option to have a design level BOM Attribute Mapping file.
• Deliver BOM checking and visualization
Solution:
• BOM Attributes Mapping
– Ability to select an ECAD Design item such as a project file or board file when executing
the Load action in BOM Attributes Mapping Editor. The WWGM shall execute the
pvecad2pvs utility in the background. The resulting CSV file shall be loaded and the end
user shall be able to select the design attributes in the UI as implemented today.
• System or Design level
• BOM Report
