Administrative history:
 Associate Deans had an Info Session for Research
Faculty.
 Developed process documents for hiring and
promoting Research Faculty.
http://lsa.umich.edu/research/policies/prs no longer
draft.
 Met with each department/unit to review Research
Faculty in their unit to determine next-steps.

Enhancements for Research Faculty
 All assistant research scientist should be assigned a mentor.
Department will manage this.
 Research Faculty will have a clear understanding of unit commitment
at time of appointment.
 Through their offer letter and MOU. RF MOU is not used the same
way as for TT faculty.
 Assistant research scientists will be reviewed for promotion after a set
amount of time.
 This keeps them from staying in the aRS position for a long period of
time.

 Research Faculty are eligible to apply for LSA funding opportunities through
eGIF based on the level of support put forward by the department as stated in
the College RESIN policy. The distribution of Research Incentive Program
funds under RESIN are at the discretion of the department just as it is for
tenure track faculty.

Very important to note that the College expects the same match from
the department as we do for TT faculty.

Outline of major changes for LSA
Research Investigator (College has different policy from OVPR—discuss later in
slides)
 Assistant Research Scientist six years for promotion consideration
 College has adopted Research Professor
 Research Faculty with 0% appointments with no other appointment at the University
will be moved to 5% funded appointment by unit.
 Research Faculty no longer 100% on grants
 Units will make a commitment to a portion of salary.
 A portion of grandfathered positions salary will be supported by the College for a
three year period.
 Department will use own project grant and request a fund transfer at year end.
 Dry Research Faculty appointments are now only for tenure track faculty or a funded
research faculty member wishing an affiliation in your unit (see process document for
more information).
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Visiting Research Investigator title is only used in the College for graduate
students who come from other institutions and do not have their PhD
completed. They will be moved to the Research Fellow title once proof that their
degree has been conferred is submitted to the LSA Faculty HR Office along with the
worksheet changing their title from Visiting Research Investigator to Research Fellow.

Outline of major changes for LSA--Research
Investigator
 Not part of the LSA promotional track.
 Can you hire into title?



Rare cases and must meet the assistant Research Scientist criteria.
Must go through same review in department and College as aRS.
Can’t stay in title more than two years.
 What happens when candidate gets PhD?

Once PhD is conferred and documentation is provided to the College
candidate’s title is automatically moved to assistant Research
Scientist through the submittal process.
The Visiting Research Investigator title is only used in the College for
graduate students who come from other institutions and do not have
their PhD completed/conferred.


What if I need to extend the clock?
What happens if promotion is not successful?
Additional College policy—

LSA did not adopt the OVPR option #2 which allows a unit to
continue an appointment beyond the six years in the assistant
research scientist title.

Outline of major changes for LSA--Assistant Research
Scientist six years for promotion consideration—
setting the clock
All existing aRS have had their clocks set during individual meetings
with departments. If you need to have a copy of that information sheet
please let me know. We used this criteria for moving existing aRS in
LSA.
 Current title holders who have held their titles for less than three
years (appointed in 2006 or after) will have up to six years for
central review. A mid-level review will take place in three years.
 Current title holders who have held their titles for more than three
years (appointed before 2006) will have up to four years for central
review. The mid-level review will take place next year.

Things Administrators need to know for appointing a Research Faculty member.








Research Investigator is used as holding spot for aRS
aRS dossiers reviewed by Divisional AD—no external letters
required.
All appointments higher than aRS go to College DEC and EC—
process document has checklists and written documentation on how
to do this.
Term Appointments (upcoming slide)
Visiting Research Faculty Member (upcoming slide)
Adjunct Research Faculty Member (upcoming slide)
OVPR puts heavy importance put on publication record. Important
in the mentoring stage of career.
Make sure that their CV supports them at the suggested level of
appointment by reviewing the criteria for each title.

Things Administrators need to know for appointing a
Research Faculty member--Term Limited Research
Faculty Appointments
 Follows same process as if not term-limited with the
exception of the three-year funding requirement.

13
Things Administrators need to know for appointing a Research
Faculty member--Visiting Research Faculty Appointments
Visiting research faculty appointments are for scholars visiting
the University for a predetermined time (one year or less) to
conduct research. Typically such an individual holds his/her
primary appointment at another academic/research
institution, and the appointing unit expects him/her to return
to that position. Appointing units may offer visiting research
faculty appointments at any research faculty rank, consistent
with the person's professional qualifications as specified in
the OVPR document.
Visiting appointments are for one year or less in duration and
requests for extension of appointment go to appropriate
Divisional AD.

Things Administrators need to know for appointing a Research
Faculty member--Adjunct Research Faculty Appointments
Adjunct research faculty appointments are used when an
individual's primary employment responsibilities lie outside
the University. An adjunct faculty appointment indicates that
the individual is working for a limited, part-time portion of
his/her work effort on research. Appointing units may offer
adjunct appointments at any research faculty rank, consistent
with the person's professional qualifications as specified in
the OVPR document.
Adjunct appointments are for one year or less in duration and
requests for extension of appointment go to appropriate
Divisional AD.

Things Administrators need to know for
the promotion of a Research Faculty
member.
 There is a clock for aRS (as we already discussed).
 All promotion dossiers go to the College DEC and EC.
 The College website has a process document laying out
the timeline. It follows very closely to the TT process.
Mandy Harrison helps manage the process.
 Term limited appointments are not part of the promotion
process.
 Like appointments OVPR weighs heavily the publication
and grant record of individual.

Things Administrators need to know when
submitting proposals
 Salary requested for RF can not exceed 95% of their 12 month
appointment (or appropriate percentage is not full-time) or 11.4 months
 Remember that the 5% effort that the department is paying is not for
this research but for them to do administrative tasks or writing other
grants—do not show as cost sharing.
 Example budget justification:
 Dr. (fill in name) is a Research Faculty member employed by the
University
of Michigan who carries (his/her) research at the University. This
position is a non-tenure-track, non-faculty position. At the
University of Michigan, Research Faculty are expected to obtain their
salary support from research grants over a twelve month period. In
addition to the funds we are requesting, the UM supports a small
portion of the salary in order to allow the writing of proposals and
conducting other administrative duties.
