Tell you front back partner what this
means
 When
addition or subtraction signs separate
an algebraic expression into parts, each part
is called a TERM.
 The numerical factor of a term that contains
a variable is called the coefficient.
 LIKE TERMS are terms that contain the same
variables.
Three terms
3x + 7 + x
Like terms
 Use
properties to write an equivalent
expression that has no like terms and no
parenthesis.
 Example : x + x = 2x
4
( 6x) = 4 * 6 * x
= (4 x 6) x X
= 24x
Does order matter when we are adding or
multiplying? What property are we using when
we change order?
 (3
d
x p) x 11
+d+d
 7w
+8+x
The expression
3(x + 1) + x
represents the total cost
The total
cost is
$4x + $3
3 + 3 + 4 = 2(3) + 4
x + x + y = 2x + y
(14y + x) + 22y = (x + 14y) + 22y
= x + (14y + 22y)
= x + 36y
4(2x + y) = 4(2x) + 4(y)
= 8x + 4y
 What
is the GCF?
 Divide
both terms by the GCF
27x + 18y = 9(3x + 2y)
 Simplify
3x + 9y + 2x
 Simplify
7(3x + y)
 Factor
12x + 8y
 The
farmers market sells fruit baskets. Each
basket has 3 apples and 1 pear. Use a to
represent the cost of each apple and p to
represent the cost of each pear. Write and
simplify an expression that represents the
total cost of 5 baskets.
 5(6x)
 2x
+ 5y + 7x
 4(2x

Factor

 The
gift bag from Claire’s includes 5
bottles of nail polish and 2 tubes of lip
gloss. (Sorry boys, I know this doesn’t
interest you ). Use p to represent the
cost of each bottle of nail polish and g to
represent the cost of each tube of lip
gloss. Write and simplify an expression
that represents the total cost of 8 gift
bags.
 Target
sells a candy basket that contains bags
of skittles and bags of M&M’s. The basket
has 3 bags of M&M’s and 4 bags of Skittles.
The price of M&M’s is represented as m and
the price of skittles is represented as s. If
Adam wants to buy 5 gift baskets (one for
each of his favorite teachers), how much
money would he spend?
 Katie
is k years old. Will is 5 years older
than Katie. Graham is 3 times as old as Will.
Josh is k years older than Graham. Write an
expression and simplify it to determine how
old Graham is.

friends went to a circus. Each ticket to get
in costs $x. 2 of the friends paid an extra $2
to see the tight rope walker. How much will
it cost for all the friends to go to the circus.
Write an expression and then simplify it.
