BELL RINGER
The vertices of figure ABCD are A(4,2),
B(-1, 0), C(5, 5), and D(1, -3). This figure
is translated 3 units to the right and 4
units up.

VOCABULARY
Dilation – A transformation that enlarges or
reduces a figure by a scale factor
NOTES
When the center of a dilation is the origin, you
can find the coordinates of the image by
multiplying each coordinate of the figure by the
scale factor.
Use the notation (x, y) ⇨(kx, ky) to describe the
dilation.
EXAMPLE 1
DILATION IN A COORDINATE PLANE
EXAMPLE 2
DILATION IN A COORDINATE PLANE
A figure has vertices D(-4, 4), E(4, 8), F(8,
8), and G(4, 0). Graph the figure and the
image of the polygon after a dilation with
a scale factor of ¼.
EXAMPLE 3
DILATION IN A COORDINATE PLANE
A figure has vertices R(-3, 6), S(3, 12),
and T(3, 3). Graph the figure and the
image of the figure after a dilation
with a scale factor of 1/3.
EXAMPLE 4
DILATIONS IN A COORDINATE PLANE
A triangle has vertices A(1, -2), B(0, 2),
and C(-2, -1). Find the coordinates of
the triangle after a dilation with a
scale factor of 2.
EXAMPLE 5
DILATIONS IN A COORDINATE PLANE
A figure has vertices X(-3, 6), Y(3, 0),
and Z(3, 3). Find the coordinates of
the figure after a dilation with a
scale factor of 3.
EXAMPLE 6
DILATIONS IN A COORDINATE PLANE
A triangle has vertices H(-1, -2), I(1, 4),
and J(2, 1). Find the coordinates of
the triangle after a dilation with a
scale factor of 4.
