•Wales is one of four
states of the UK. It’s
in the South-West of
the Great Britain and
it is wetted by the
Bristol Channel in the
South, the Saint
George Channel in the
South-West and the
Ireland Sea in the
North and in the
West.
•
The territory is very
green because there
are frequent rains.
It’s flat but there
are also few
mountains. The
weather is wet and
warm in summer and
very cold in winter
The Cambrian Mountains are a hikers paradise
and despite what many may think, this is not a
desolate and deserted landscape at all. In fact
there are beautiful valleys and lakes.
The mountain range is rocked between 1500 and
2000 feet in altitude. An area of outstanding natural
beauty: it has many rivers, streams, waterfalls and
impressive valleys.
• Cardiff is the capital of Wales
and its largest city. It is located
on the south coast of Wales and
it was a small town until the
early 19th century.
Cardiff is the major port for the
transport of coal. It became a
city in 1905 and proclaimed
capital of Wales in 1955.
According to 2005 population
estimates, the population of
Cardiff is around 319,700
people.
• Bryn Celli Ddu (the mound in a dark grove) is
the best passage grave in Wales. It started as
a late Neolithic, with a stone circle
surrounded by a bank and internal ditch. This
is one of many ancients graves in Wales that
create fantastic natural views.
• Wales is often called the "Land of Castles"
and rightly so, as it is home to some of
Europe's finest surviving examples of
medieval castle construction. The most
famous castles in Wales are Chepstow in the
southeast of Wales, the picturesque
Beaumaris on the Isle of Anglesey, and the
charming Ewloe in the north.
The principal trades of
economy in Wales are:
- Industry, in fact there are
many textile and iron
factories;
- Agricolture, there are many
feedings of sheeps and
bovins;
- Tourism is very important
because there are many
beautiful views.
• The name of Wales is derived by the
Germanic word Walha that means foreign.
• The national saying is: Cymru am byth that
means Wales forever.
• The religion is catholic and protestant, the
patron saint is S. David.
