What is Mental Illness?
A wide range of disorders that affect mood, thinking,
behaviour

Mental Health in Children and Youth
• Half of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by 14, and
three-quarters have begun by age 24
• Severe mental illnesses typically present in late
adolescence and early adulthood
• Mental illness peaks when young people are most
vulnerable
• Complex period of biological, cognitive and psychosocial
development
• Identity development, building relationships with family and
friends
• Educational and vocational goals embarked upon

• Increased Collaboration - Fraser Health and Ministry of
Children & Family Development
• Provincial Collaborative process
• Enhanced Child Youth Crisis Response Service
• Establish a Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Stabilization
Unit (CAPSU)
10-Bed Child & Adolescent Psychiatric
Stabilization Unit (CAPSU)
• Short stay assessment and crisis stabilization
• children and youth age 6 - 17 years in acute psychiatric
crisis requiring urgent hospital intervention
• Rapid turnover: 5-7 day length of stay
• Capacity to manage high acuity and elopement for
at-risk patients
• Specialized multidisciplinary team with dedicated
child and adolescent psychiatrists
• Will operate 24 / 7
