Technological Context
“Today’s young people in their teens and 20s,
who have been dubbed “digital natives,” have
never known a world without computers, 24hour TV news, Internet, & cell-phones—with
their video, music, cameras & text messaging.”
(Small & Vorgan, 2008)

Just How Wired are Your Students?
(Findings of the Canadian Internet Project, 2008)
Data from 2007: “Internet use is almost universal among
Canada’s youth”
More from Canadian Internet
Project, 2008
 97% of BC youth 12-17 are online
 Average online time of 12-17 hr/week
 ~46% have been online for about 6+ years
 ~56% of 11 yr & younger are online
 Average online time of 3.5hr/week

Technology can effectively
support optimal teaching &
learning when you pick the right
tool & use it appropriately.

Yet we also need to
stay open to
creative &
innovative uses of
technology.
Remember the Internet
started as a military scientific
research network in the US

Using Technology
* Technology knowledge & skills
“stick” when you need to use them
(internal or external motivation)
*Technology knowledge & skills stay
with you when you use them
repeatedly

The Big Picture:
Good Instructional Practice &
Technology
7 Principles of Good Education
(Chickering & Gamson, 1987; adapted)
 Good practice in education:
 encourages contact between students, families &






teachers
develops reciprocity & cooperation among students
encourages active learning
gives prompt feedback
emphasizes time on task
communicates high expectations
respects diverse talents & ways of learning.

Common Uses of Technology in Teaching
 Websearching (content, lesson ideas)
 Virtual Tours
 Making overheads/Master Sheets
 Assessment/evaluation, gradebook systems
 Using publisher materials
 Online games
 Ask an Expert
 WebQuests
 Tools and resources
The Smaller Picture:
Electronic Resources from Publishers
Publishers & E-Content
 Virtually all major publishers provide some form of
electronic supplements to print materials
 Market driven
 Increasingly electronic displacing print materials
 Publishers with “good” electronic practices
 Make user-friendly materials
Consistent interface , layout, variety of resources for “online”
 Provide quality materials that help you do a better jobincrease
student learning
 Modify or add to existing materials to make them better

 Desire to have you purchase their line

Need to insert the U drive piece
•You will need to download materials.
Please use your U: drive because it is
accessible from anywhere on campus
as well as from work or home via
Internet. If you don’t know what a U
drive is, please follow the next few
slides
Using the U: drive is not mandatory, but STRONGLY encouraged to preserve
your peace of mind.
In either your U: drive or a memory stick, please create the following folders:
“Sci Methods”
Open the Sci Methods folder & create a new folder inside called “Tech Workshop”

Key Icons & Formats
BC Science Icons :
File Formats Lingo:
•pdf : “portable document file”; requires
a PDF reader like “Adobe”; preserves
fonts, graphics, layout of finished
product regardless of app. used to
generate; generally take up less memory
than “docs”
•doc: “document file”; native proprietary
file format from Microsoft Word; can be
imported into other programs (eg.
OpenOffice) and other programs can
export in compatible format
•zip: a compressed file format to make
large files or groups of files more easily
transferred or stored; uses an app like
WinZip or WinRAR to unpack

•Grouped by thematic unitschaptersspecific
pages of the text in linear order
•Include content of eVersion of text + other
material
•pdfs, Word docs, audio, video, graphics, links etc.
•Fairly dense listing—but correlated by text page
•“Chapter” links are actually to locations in one
page with all chapters’ information
•Click on “Unit 1 Chemistry”

Unit Specific Resources
• Locate Sect. 1.2 Atomic Theory PPT
• Open it.
• Novice users: save “as is” to your U drive (or memory
stick). For a slight challenge, go to slide 5—it’s very wordy.
Edit it to cut down on some of the words & then save it.
• Mid/Advanced activity: edit down words & find a picture
of Ernest Rutherford, include it on slide with photo credit
& link to source
• Save the edited PPT to your U drive (or memory stick).

Reflecting on Incorporating
These Text Resources
• Now you have seen what electronic resources are
available in relation to BC Science 9.
• At the end of the session, you will be required to
identify at least 3 Teacher Corner or Home
Version resources and describe how you would
use it.
Julia Hengstler
Faculty of Education
Vancouver Island University
Considerations when Incorporating
Technology
• Benefits?
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Julia Hengstler
Many students want to use technology
Good content available
Access to experts
Flexibility of material presentation/assessment
Data used can be most current science
Keeps teachers/students/homes in closer contact
Helps with collaboration among students—and
teachers re. Pro-D
Faculty of Education
Vancouver Island University
Challenges of Working with Technology
• Some challenges—what do you think?
• Equipment availability/reliability—
• Student access outside of school
• Ensure equipment availability sometime during school day
whether in class, lunch, etc.
• Software –cost, availability & installations, reviews,
pilots, implementations
• Sufficient Pro-D & teacher “practice” time
• Privacy of student/personal data
• Shallow research—1st 10 Goggle hits
Julia Hengstler
Faculty of Education
Vancouver Island University
As you think about incorporating
technology, remember:
Everything you have students do should be
educationally purposeful.
Technology is an instructional tool: pick it to do a
particular job—don’t throw it in as an extraneous
add-on or gimmick.

• Use the remaining workshop time to complete this worksheet
• Ask for support as you need it
• Submit paper or document to professor
• For electronic—email to Bernie: [email protected]

Activity: Technology Incorporation into
Micro Lesson
• Levels of incorporation:
• Novice: leveraging materials that parallel
“traditional” teaching modes
• Eg. downloading BLMs, PPTs “as is” or with minimal
customization
• Mid-Range: leveraging resources that extend
traditional teaching modes & allow some interaction
• Eg. online assessments, multimedia, PPTs with some
modifications
• Advanced: leveraging resources for traditional & nontraditional teaching modes
• modifying e-content to make it your own, developing own
e-content, tools, etc.
