Audio Transcripts:
Eddie:
I wish I could start exhibiting my art!
Mandy: Only acclaimed artists have work accepted by museums.
Eddie:
Art is displayed in public spaces too.
Mandy: True. Public art is interesting because it’s freely accessible.
Eddie:
You can find intricate sculptures in many subway stops in New York.
Mandy: I love the work by Elizabeth Murray. It’s a lively description of people’s morning
experience: sunlight, coffee cups, and trees.
Eddie:
That doesn’t appeal to me at all.
Mandy: Art is pretty subjective.
Eddie:
New York isn’t the only city implementing this idea. Over 150 artists have
decorated about 90 percent of Stockholm’s subway stations in Sweden! The most
impressive pieces are the walls and ceilings that look like caves.
Mandy: My favorite is the Dome of Light in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It’s the world’s largest
public art installation, and it really complements the city’s creative atmosphere.
Eddie:
That piece is exquisite.
Mandy: You know, New York’s transportation art program has put out a call for artists, so
they’ll be commissioning new pieces soon.
Eddie:
Why didn’t you say so? Let’s apply!

VOCABULARY DRILL
Audio Transcripts:
Broadway
Perhaps the most famous musicals are the ones that take the stage on Broadway in
Manhattan. Along with London’s West End Theatre, Broadway presents the highest level of
theatrical performance in the English-speaking world. Today’s most notable Broadway show
is The Phantom of the Opera. The show has been terrifying and entertaining audiences
since it premiered on Broadway in 1988. It’s one of the longest-running musicals ever!
Cirque du Soleil
Cirque du Soleil is known for performances that combine circus arts and street
entertainment. With entertainers employed from more than 40 countries, many international
acrobatic styles can be blended into their lively acts. To aid in each show’s overall
atmosphere, performers dress in exquisite costumes. Around 300 experts in the fields of
shoemaking and clothing design work full-time to put on such a circus!
David Copperfield
David Copperfield is a master of illusions, and his skills have earned him 11 Guinness
World Records. These records include most tickets sold globally by a solo entertainer and
the largest illusion ever performed. His stunts certainly qualify him to be the holder of that
second record. Not only has he walked right through the Great Wall of China, but he’s also
made the Statue of Liberty disappear!

We need to discuss what we’re buying everyone for Christmas.
Lauren: I want to buy my mom the complete DVD set of her favorite soap opera.
Ryan:
That will cost a pretty penny. I’m giving my mother a pot of mint since
she enjoys herbs, and we can get some good deals online.
Lauren: Good idea! Maybe I’ll do the same. I plan to give my sister a purse.
Ryan:
Just make sure it’s not a brand-name one.
Lauren: You should get your dad a set of golf clubs.
Ryan:
We will have to pay through the nose for those! I’d get him a year’s
subscription to the New York Times, but the rate is highway robbery.
Lauren: Then buy him a new dress shirt. That won’t break the bank.
Ryan:
What should we get our friends?
Lauren: I’m going to make scarves for mine. I love knitting, and the yarn will
cost next to nothing.
Ryan:
I was going to get my friends tickets to a basketball tournament, but
maybe I’ll buy them each a team jersey instead. That’ll be easier on my

I’m not really a movie enthusiast.
Come on, Tammy. Everyone has a favorite movie.
Fine. You go first.
Some of the scenes in animated films knock my socks off!
Watching kids’ movies is about as exciting as watching paint dry.
OK. How about dramas? There are lots of good actresses that take my breath
away with their performances.
Watching those films is like watching grass grow—the plots move so slowly!
What do you like, then?
Martial arts movies are spectacular. The fights in them are usually quite
realistic.
That’s true. What else?
I enjoy fantasy movies. Every time the hero beats the villain, it gives me goose
bumps.
Those types of films have exciting storylines, I guess. However, it’s the special
effects that impress me.
Sure, but it doesn’t matter if the actors in the film bore the audience to tears.

Cleo: You bet. We should have residents from every dorm coming. Our fallthemed snacks and decorations will really help make this party a big hit.
Jake: As long as it goes better than our Halloween party, I’ll be satisfied.
Cleo: Yeah, that didn’t amount to much. We ran out of pumpkins for the
carving competition.
Jake: Don’t remind me. But last year’s Singles-only Valentine’s Day Banquet
went over with a bang.
Cleo: Definitely. Tasty food is the number one way to make any event
successful.
Jake: That’s why our Spring Social went over like a lead balloon. Everyone
was starving after all the exhausting games we played, and we had
nothing to give them.
Cleo: Yeah. You know what is never a disaster though?
Jake: Undoubtedly, it’s the Christmas Bash!
Cleo: I think it’s the gift exchange that makes the party a continual smashing
