History and Politics of Solar Energy
● 7th century, sun magnified for fire.
● 1800s, solar collector heated steam engines.
● 1936, Solar boiler - Charles Greeley Abbott, an American astrophysicist ● 1920s - 1950s, solar industry growth
So Cal Production & Use
● California leads the nation in houses with ,solar panels installed, totaling over 230,000 ● Goal for 12,000MW by 2020
National Production & Use
● Solar capacity increased in 2012 by 76 percent from 2011 ● utility-scale solar had sent 12,303 GWH of electricity to the U.S. grid
Global Production & Use
•In 2013 solar power world wide grew 35 % •136,697 mw produced
Why is your energy source an effective fuel? ● Renewable Energy ● Long Durability ● Abundant ● Sustainable ● Environmentally Friendly ● Low Maintenance
How does the use of your energy source effect the environment/earth's climate?
● Reduced Dependence on Fossil Fuels ● Environmental Advantages ● Government Incentives
How Solar Works 1) Photovoltaic cells convert sun to DC power 2) Inverter converts DC to AC 3) AC power to electric panel, then powers house
What are the shortcomings of your source? ● Birds go poof ● Requires large area ● Expensive installation ● Only works in sunlight
Possible Solutions to These Concerns.
- Putting barriers up so birds dont die - Using large areas or just on house roofs - You pay off the large initial investment in the long run and earn more back
Solar Energy’s Impact on the Environment -Large use of land -The materials used to clean semiconductor surface are often hazardous -Animals die from the extreme heat if they enter focal points
Advantages by category Economic Very low keep up cost/city pays you for electricity Environmental - no emmisions or toxic gasses
