10 years ago the EPL was 71 % English players, today
it is 38 %
MLS is 70 % North American (US and Canada) with
48 different nationalities -- average of 9/team
61 nationalities make up the EPL today with Europe and
West Africa leading the pack …(Liverpool-Everton)
The top 4 teams in the EPL have 33 nationalities
With that come different cultures ---American culture – recreational, hobby – white, suburban
Non-American culture – passion, soccer education

The English Academies are struggling to produce
players for the EPL
Rafa Benitez of Liverpool evaluated their Academy
pool and realized the best player was not good
enough for his team, nor any of the better EPL team
Academies are now recruiting young players from out
of the country to learn their system/style of play
Ajax Youth system has 50% non-whites in their
14 teams of 214 players

The Coaching Paradigm we’ve been using is past its
“expiration date” -- be open to change, explore !
Generation Gap is different
(Difficulty dealing with competition and adversity)
Players are ill equipped PSYCHOLOGICALLY
(crisis phone call)
Coach to Player





The player needs to feel appreciated ………
the importance of communication and the value of roles
Making adjustments will increase the player’s motivation
and increase the level of competition within programs
Managing Players’ Expectations vs. Coaching

10-12 years to develop an established soccer player
Thousands of touches per training session
Demands of the game are changing faster than ever
The Journey of development takes time, patience,
great understanding, and a plan
Basic fundamentals remain the essence of the game
Players must be flexible in playing roles and
adaptable to the constant changes
Speed of execution is the key factor

‘The art of asking questions’
It will develop 'clever' & creative players !
What kind of questions?
Open questions, starting with:
what, when, where, who, which ?
Better not:
why?
Asking ????









Asking the right questions will teach
the players to make the right choice of the soccer
actions themselves
It will motivate them to take responsibility of
their own soccer performance
Asking the right questions will improve the
players' perception of the complex soccer
situations
It will enlarge their awareness of the possible
soccer solutions
Effectivity
We remember:

Must Play in 4 Ways
Culture, Art and Science
System






4-5-1
4-6-0
Tactical Flexibility
Start game in 1 system.
Change during the game
Finish with yet another
depends on many variables –
score, time, field conditions, injuries, subs, cards, referee ----
Individual Player
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
Must be highly skilled to play a faster game in less
space, with less time on the ball –
High level of passing and receiving skills –
High ball speed passing over short, medium and long
distances, on the ground and in the air.
Tactical flexibility to play as the game unfolds –
Players must be able to think, play, have insight
spontaneously, must be creative !
Higher number of different nationalities playing
everywhere, changing the game
Spain – Combination Play
Germany vs Spain
Spain vs Germay
Play in 4 Ways




Open field
Combination play, end to end action
Packed Defense (deep)
Patient, probing, penetrating, finish
Pressing (high up field)
Quick play, change point of attack, penetrate
Restarts
Precision, movement, delivery, timing, finish
Culture – Art – Science
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
The increasing number of foreign players brings new
cultural experiences –
Understand the differences between people from
different backgrounds
there are 53 countries and 208 Federations in FIFA on
6 continents
Sports are the 2nd fastest growing industry in the
word
West Africa is 2nd only to Europe with players in the
EPL
Culture – Art – Science
1.
2.
3.
4.
Balance the blending of different backgrounds
into a cohesive team
Identify common denominators that everyone can
agree with
The expertise of the coach in the area of manmanagement, team selection, tactical adjustments
and inter-personal relationships
The bigger the challenge the greater the control
of diversity -- more centered approach
Culture – Art – Science
1.
2.
3.
The role of science in sports is becoming very
important in identifying essential qualities and
characteristics.
There is significant software to collect necessary
information and to assess collected data
Match analysis, Player analysis, recruitment,
scouting, sports science, medical, distance covered,
types of actions performed (shots, goals, passes,
tackles, sprints )…… nearly everything you would
want to track can be tracked

6.
7.
Organization of coaching is top priority
Coaching education through different level courses
Hierarchical pyramid of development from Grassroots to

massive input at the Grassroots level
Establishment of regional training centers for the elite

95% go on to the Club level training at age16
Marcello Lippi: “ French player – good education, good

Champions of Euro 2008 with a young team of
athletic, highly skilled players who came through the

U17,U18 and U20 categories.
Spain has a stable coaching philosophy
Long-standing youth soccer philosophy

rather than winning
Style of play has not changed
Emphasis on technique, ball circulation at high speed
with combination play and attacking moves

Following their debacle in Euro 2000, they set up
a Commission to look into their failed system.
Complete overhaul after meticulous planning and
data gathering
Asked many questions and got answers
What were the best teams doing ?
What were the latest trends in the game ?
How could they implement into their soccer culture
the necessary changes ?
Inclusive not Exclusive

Thoughts to Consider
1.
1.
2.
3.

How will you train the 6-8-10 year olds today
to compete in the changing game 10 years from now?
Considering the influx of foreign born players:
How will including young local foreign born players
impact your team and club ?
How will it impact competition within the team ?
How much might it raise the level of play within your
club ?
Closing Comments




Gerard Houllier, FFF:
“ If you don’t question and try to upgrade your
methods you will be left behind … you have to be
adventurous … that’s how you progress.
Dick Bate, English FA:
“ Never before in the history of the game have so
many innovations, changes and shifts occurred in
such a short time.
Closing Comments - 2



Dick Bate, con’t:
Preparing young players and teams for the future is
the role of the coach, who works largely from a
present-day curriculum which is rapidly being
overtaken by the game’s forward moving
technical and tactical agenda.
Where will the game be in 10 years time and what
will the effective coach need in order to produce
competitive players in the future?
Closing Comments - 3



With the game becoming a “ world game”, we must
include, blend, balance, and compete with the everincreasing influx of foreign players in our own
backyard.
We must also be aware of the background and
passion that these players bring to our soccer culture
and how it will challenge the balance of ‘old school’
and ‘new school’ thinking.
If you stand still, you fall behind !!
Final Thought
1.
Identify / Develop the ‘elite’ player
2.
Expand the potential pool of players
