Use of EDAS
for the management of
road regulated fleets
EGNOS Service Provision Workshop, 4 July 2013
1
Why EGNOS EDAS
Telespazio positioning in EGNOS/Galileo applications
 Service Provider for GNSS downstream
 Ready for EGNOS today and also preparing for Galileo
EGNOS EDAS
 A “clear” role for a value added Service Provider
Service Providers can develop solutions that use/exploit EGNOS data from EDAS
and deliver products and services
 A “clear” need from specific markets, primarily transport
EGNOS can offer an added value to regulated applications,
capable to generate benefits

Roadmap
 Focus on EGNOS “priority” markets
 Exploit EGNOS added value in sustainable business cases
 Converge with the interests of main users (business and institutional)
 Align with National and EU policies
 Search for business models based on EGNOS
 Convey best practices based on GPS into EGNOS (OS firstly, then EDAS)
 Turn proven solutions into large-scale operation to lead to products/fruition
 Combine National and European efforts to support standardization
 Pursue cross-border cooperation for harmonisation

Road as a priority market for EGNOS EDAS
 Road among the largest markets for GNSS
 Strong market growth of GNSS use in road applications
 GPS widely adopted in mass-market and professional applications
 A myriad of applications for different uses
 Various regulated applications, possibly benefitting from EGNOS:
Transport of dangerous goods
Urban regulated fleets
Professional fleets

State of play of EGNOS EDAS in road
Technology
 Majority of the GNSS receivers (mass-market/automotive grade) ready
 Solutions/products available on the market
European CEN technical specification/standard
CEN Workshop Agreement CWA 16390:2012
Used in operations
Tracking & tracing of dangerous goods
Validated in other road applications (technical and business)
 Monitoring/management of urban regulated fleets
 Monitoring/management of professional fleets

EGNOS EDAS
for tracking & tracing dangerous goods (1)
Implementation path
2009: eni and Italy’s Ministry of Transport validated EGNOS and
considered EGNOS OS added value interesting for operational use
2010:
 eni started a step-wise adoption of EGNOS OS and EGNOS EDAS
for monitoring the tankers transporting dangerous goods in Italy
 Existing GPS systems retrofitted to use EGNOS
through Telespazio LCS
2011: implementation of EU large-scale operations &
standardization

EGNOS EDAS
for tracking & tracing dangerous goods (2)
Today’s facts and figures
 300 operational tankers transporting hydrocarbon and chemical in Europe
 Extension to vehicles in Germany and in Switzerland and to the transport of aviation
material
 ITS Directive in Italy (Decree 1 February 2013)
Benefits for the users
 Confidence/guarantee on the position for a better control
 Higher position accuracy for enhanced risk management, prevention/statistics
 Commercial benefits
 Increased safety

Outlook
Transport of dangerous goods
 Full-scale implementation in Italy
 Continuation of cross-border cooperation
 Extension to rail transport of dangerous goods
 Further exploitation of EGNOS EDAS
 Galileo/multiconstellation
Other road applications
Launch of best practices for urban mobility/regulated fleets operations:
 City logistics
 Limited traffic zone
 Touristic buses and special vehicles fleet in urban areas
 Local Public Transport
