system organizations in the world today.
He is a former college drop out who proved his intelligence in the
programming world. He chose to take is attention span disorder,
where he thought it best fit, which was programming in is mind.
This Presentation will take you through a brief walk in Larry
Ellison's world, whether it be his job, life or hobby.
EARLY BIOGRAPHY
Lawrence Joseph Ellison was born on august 17, 1944, in New
York City.
Mothered by Florence Spellman, and later adopted by his great
aunt, Lillian Ellison, and uncle Louis Ellison.
He grew up in the northern part of Chicago, and later moved to
South Shore, Chicago, where he would live until he moved on his
own to North Carolina, beginning is programming career that he
lives with today.
Interesting enough, Lawrence did not meet his biological mother,
until he was 48 years old.
Education
Ellison had attended and graduated from Eugene Field
Elementary School, of Chicago.
He later moved on to attend high school in South Shore,
Chicago, where his intelligence began to excel.
After his graduation in 1962, he would take his knowledge to
the University of Illinois, where he would only drop out after
his sophomore semesters due to the death of his adoptive
mother.
After spending the summer away from Chicago, he went
back and attended the university of Chicago, hoping to fulfill
degree’s in physics and mathematics, but he would once
again drop out after only a short period later.
Education cont.
His drop out years were not a complete waste of time, during his last
months attending university, Ellison had discovered the world of
computer designing.
He would go on to teach himself the knowledge of computer
programming, where he became very attracted to the idea of creating
programs.
At the age of twenty, he began to create programs in his permanent
home of North Carolina. He had worked in multiple corporations as a
computer programmer.
• In 1966, Ellison began bouncing around jobs in North
Carolina where he worked with programming.
• He became the vice president of the Precision
Instruments Co. in the late 1960’s, but this wasn’t
satisfying enough for Ellison
• In 1977, he was hired by a company called Ampex
Corporation where his ability would be put to task. He
was to design a database for the CIA, and they decided
to call it “Oracle”. He and a former boss Robert Miner
had decided to open up software development labs,
where $2000 of Ellison's own capital was put into the
investment, where they would create their own
corporation known as Oracle.
As of 1977, Ellison was the C.E.O and co-founder of the
Oracle Corporation.
His corporation is well known for developing hardware
systems, and database management systems, or enterprise
software. Ellison’s corporation created the world's first
commercially viable relational database. This technology
revolutionized the way businesses were able to access and
use data.
Oracle has become the third largest software corporation in
the world, behind Microsoft and IBM. Ellison was on his
way to being one of the most popular names in the
programming world, becoming the richest man in the
world in 2000, but only for a short period of time.
More
Success
The success of Ellison’s creation
is overwhelming. New version’s
of the creation “oracle” are
upgraded nearly every year with
more and more success.
Larry Ellison has been the C.E.O
of Oracle since he created the
corporation, and is still the
C.E.O today.
He and his corporation are still
ranked with top competitors
today, with over 105,000
employee’s worldwide.
Oracle released a new database named “10g”in 2004,
and its the first application server software that is
designed for grid computing. The interrelationship that
Oracle and Java possess has enabled the company to
allow developers to set up stored procedures written in
the Java language.
Oracle also build software tools for database systems,
such as ERP, CRM, and SRM. Oracle have third-party
applicants that added some assistance to the success
and production of these software tools such as Aquire,
Hewlett-Packard, and Solix Technologies.
Ellison has been a rising name in the fortune category since the mid
1980’s when his corporation hit great success. Oracle has been
bypassing competitors with new upgrades, and more modern systems.
Forbes had Ellison ranked in the top ten wealthiest people worldwide
since 2000, and he has not lowered since, even reaching the richest
man in the world during a short period of 2000.
As of 2010, Ellison is ranked sixth in the world, his personal wealth
being 27 billion dollars.
Ellison was ranked the best paid executive from 2000-2010 with a
salary of 1.84 billion dollars. His salary of 2009 was just over 70
million.
Owning over 1.3 billion shares of the company, and his 38% ownership,
there is no doubt that Ellison is among the richest. He lowered his base
pay of 1.0 million in 2009 to only 1 dollar in 2010.
Ellison; His Icon status
To have a successful corporation such as Oracle, you must have one of
the great’s for your chief executive officer. Ellison is a perfect example of
a great C.E.O. He represents a perfect leader for the company, he not
only needed to create the database of the future, but he also had to use
his persuasiveness to convince the world that his relational databases
were the way of the future, in which he succeeded. He is without a
doubt, an Icon in the business world, and he should be recognized for it.
He not only has extreme leading skills for his corporation, he also has
outstanding fame and reputation. He represents Oracle within the
corporation ,and outside it to the media. It is almost like a sixth sense,
for a C.E.O to have such knowledge, to be a leader, a C.E.O that shows
his creativity and skills in every category you would want to see in a
C.E.O. leadership skills, management skills, his programming
knowledge for future products, his ability to persuade and convince
people to trust him when he says Oracle is the future. He is an icon, and
will forever be one.
Like any other billionaire in the world, Ellison has made his fair share of
donations to charities and those in need. He is a man who looks at money as
nothing another than standings in a list. He believe he will eventually donate
95% of his wealth to charitable groups.
After the shocking terrorist attack on September 11th, Ellison had donated a
software to the Federal Government that would enable the use of national
identification database for I.D cards
He has made charitable donations toward the Stanford university as thank you
to two professors who independently helped evaluate a case regarding Oracle.
He is known for his donations to the medical research and education funds that
are estimated to be hundreds of millions of dollars.
In 2004 alone ,Forbes list of charitable donations, Ellison recorded donations
adding up to $151,092,103 , nearly 1 % of his total fortune.
He is among the top donators for an American, and truly shows that his fortune
means little to him compared to what it could do for charities.
Donations
Hobbies
Aside from being the C.E.O of his corporation, Ellison enjoys
his time on the water. He is a big boat fanatic, whether it be
cruising in the sun or racing for the win.
He enjoys his massive yacht, as well as his racing team, BMW
Oracle, that he has put hundreds of millions into with the
task of winning the American Cup.
Other then his passion on the water, inland he shows great
interest in the game of tennis. Ellison has followed the game
all of his life, and in 2010 purchased 50% shares of the BPN
Paribas Open, one of the largest tennis tournaments in
America.
family
Larry Ellison was apart of many families being married 4 times. As his
programming career was growing , he met a wonderful woman named Adda
Quinn, who he married in 1967, and seven years later went through a
divorce ending the marriage in 1974.
As he worked on making his new database corporation succeed, he got
married for the second time to Nancy Wheeler Jenkins, in which they would
divorce only one year later.
Just as his corporation was about to rise in success, he met and married his
third wife, Barbara Boothe. Meeting the wonderful women brought two
wonderful children into his life. His son David, who was born in 1983, and
his daughter Margaret, otherwise known as Megan born in 1986. The birth
of his son is what brought on his third marriage as Barbara wanted to be
married after having the child.
Lastly, he married Melanie Craft in December of 2003, where they would
stay married until recently divorcing in 2010.
